Boxing a tire and taping it on is a new one for me, though. That seems like going a bit overboard, to me. The Post Office might very well refuse it.

I work for USPS. We are able to send nearly anything through the mail excepting hazardous materials like explosives, gasoline, etc. All it takes is the proper postage.

And yes, you may affix the address to the actual object itself if there is no appropriate container for the object- just a few days ago, I saw part of a car bumper being mailed while I was working.

I work in a postal distribution center, I'm not a window clerk; however, they will be happy to help you mail pretty much whatever you like, with the exceptions noted above.
