Is anyone planning to make it to Camp Casey in Covington, La?
According to Michael Moore's letter
http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/message/

People can go to Covington and be involved in the relief effort. I have been desperately trying to join some volunteer group going to the NO area for the past few days, but nobody is ready for us yet, which is frustrating to no end. My only worry is that if we go there, we will somehow be sidelined because it will look too political. Does anyone have any sense of this effort yet?

3. I'm going to be talking with Mrs Fric about this later.
I am hoping that she will be ok with me going down there to help. Though I had to twist her arm pretty hard to go to Crawford.

I also want to do more research and make sure I have a solid ride in and out, as well as a place to stake the tent and what not.

Anyone going please PM me with info.

16. Wow I wonder what strange stuff happened on this thread while I was away
All those deleted messages? Whatever. I'm glad now that's there's more information. When I posted this, I had barely even started out thinking this through. I just wanted to see what others knew. I cant imagine any need for hot-headedness. So, from what I can see by looking on the forum
http://www.vfproadtrips.org/katrina/
It looks like transportation is the issue. I'm working on getting a vehicle from relatives.

6. Uh, its really not about focusing on Cindy its about accountability
as she has stated so many times.

Camp Covington is focused on Katrina as well... not sure about anything regarding Jesusland these days, but I know that with the exception of this administration and Al Queda I will offer compassion and empathy to all fellow humans and most living beings.

There is lots of information to be found there.

Also please read this link with update from Dennis at the camp:

If you go, make sure you know this is no walk in the park, you'll need camping gear and supplies for yourself as well.

11. True that! Do not make another victim out of yourself and add to
the huge burden.

Must say again Anarchy, that it was an honor meeting you at Camp Casey 2 a few weeks back. Are you or Mr A considering going to Covington?

12. Unfortunately not now, Mr A's parents are headed for a visit, arriving
this weekend. I have to keep myself busy helping here for a while.

I'm also not so sure just how much of a help I would be there right now.

The month of August through last weekend has taken a small toll, need to re-energize just a little, spend time with a much neglected husband and home.

17. Thanks Anarchy
I hadn't tracked down much when I posted the thread, but now that I've looked around a little, I think this thing is great -- they're just getting stuff done because it needs to be done, and they had stuff from the Peace House. I was never impugning any of the folks that started this in the least. I just was concerned if there was any furor surrounding it. All I want to do is get some kind of traction in getting that place back together. When I know exactly what my transportation situation is, I'll post again.

and get to read more about what is going on in CC, LA.

I bet you won't find anyone behind a fence where they are working and the fact they are contining out to set this operation up and help in the surrounding communities is important.
Not just the Peace House sent the stuff over, their are Chapters around the country working on this, and now that they are up and really running with the internet people, including DU'ers are chipping in.

Peace

and spread the word.

also, please forgive my manners, earlier I forgot to say welcome to DU!

9. I probably can't go, but...
...if Camp Casey still has all that stuff ginbarn and I donated last month, Katrina victims are more than welcome to it.

Cindy is an absolute doll. I'm thinking Cindy Sheehan for head of FEMA. Or on the Senate Intelligence Committee. Or maybe even President...

13. Derby, when sorting through everything over the weekend I believe I
Edited on Wed Sep-07-05 03:27 PM by anarchy1999
ran across the ice packs you had sent. They went either to Austin or to Covington. Tons of stuff were sent out. Two of the largest u-hauls available to rent were stuffed full of things that had been donated or just left. Even a child's car seat.

If there was a name on something we tried to make contact, it not it went. I thought of a couple of DU'ers I knew had left items and I felt sure they would not mind.

15. After looking at my calendar
I've decided it would be a better use of my time & $ to just donate approx. what it would have cost me to go just for one day (drive friday, work saturday, drive back sunday--really not worth it given the distance), so this weekend, i'll be taking the list of what's needed to the store, & sending it & a monetary donation to the vets.

i'd love to be there to personally pitch in, but it's just not in the cards this round, at least for the next month or so.

19. That is great DG, Don't feel bad about not being there. This is going to
be going on for several months. Hopefully we will be able to get families back together that have been scattered everywhere and put behind fences and armed guards.
