I just called Senators Cantwell and Murray, and Congressman McDermott to express my anger and concern at how the relocated victims of Katrina are being treated. All three of my calls were answered on the first ring, all three men I spoke to where very nice (and I was very nice to them). I told them, in essence, that I had been reading more and more reports of the people who had been relocated to areas away from the hurricane-damaged areas who were being kept in buildings and structures that were being surrounded by newly erected fencing, and armed military personnel. I told them I understood that people needed to check in (we have to have a list of those who got out and at least a starting place for family members who are searching for them), needed to get clean clothing, etc. But what I could not understand why they are being treated as if they are prisoners. I said that every day, this whole situation just became more unbelievable and harder to wrap my head around, and that I wanted to express my concern to the people in Washington who are there to speak for me.
All three of these men told me that they had been receiving large volumes of calls with this same concern, and that these messages (the "piles of messages" as Senator Cantwell's office told me)would definitely be passed on to the Senators and Congressman.
I know a lot of DUers have already made calls, but please, if you haven't, seriously consider it.
