I too use DU for it's value as a news aggregrator. However, unless the story is from a major newswire or a trusted outlet, I generally disregard or look for verification elsewhere.

You have to verify. Never trust a single source. In fact, if the news is outlandish enough, and if there's only one source, I discount it. And if it contains the word "Madsen" anywhere in the post, I discount it.

You have to run your own filter, and it's always been this way.

is taking a risk--check those sources! DU makes no claims to infallibility and with more than 75,000 members anybody could come in here and say anything.

That being said, I always go here first for news, and then look around for confirmation from a mainstream source before I go spreading rumors.
