Battle of New Orleans
by Jimmy Driftwood

In 1814 we took a little trip,
along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip.
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans,
and we fought the bloody British in the town of New Orleans.

We fired our guns and the British kept a comin',
There wasn't 'bout as many as there was awhile ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

Oh we looked down the river and we seen the British come.
There must have been a hundred of 'em beatin' on a drum.
They stepped so high and they made their bugles ring.
We stood behind our cotton bales and didn¹t say a thing.

Old Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise,
if we didn¹t fire our muskets till we looked 'em in the eyes.
We held our fire till we seen their faces well,
then we opened up our squirrel guns and gave 'em a little...Well....we...

....fired our guns and the British kept a comin',
There wasn't 'bout as many as there was awhile ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

We fired our cannons till the barrels melted down,
then we grabbed an alligator and we fired another round.
We filled his head with cannonballs and powdered his behind,
and when we touched the powder off, the gator lost his mind.

We fired our guns and the British kept a comin',
There wasn't 'bout as many as there was awhile ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

We fired our guns and the British kept a comin',
There wasn't 'bout as many as there was awhile ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

(I believe the battle was fought after the peace treaty had been signed

didn't this battle help Jackson to the presidency??)

1. I heard a reworking of "City of New Orleans" on Randi Rhodes today.
It even sounded like Arlo Guthrie singing.

7. "City of New Orleans" is a train song by the late Steve Goodman.
Guthrie recorded it in the early 70s and had a hit with it.
Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse the issue.

9. Might try later. I rewrote "Battle Hymn of the Republic" a few days ago,
Edited on Wed Sep-07-05 06:30 PM by highplainsdem
as "Battle Hymn of New Orleans" (that topic's at http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=4600654 ), and got some favorable responses, including from people who thought it might be useful on September 24.

Editing to add those lyrics:

Battle Hymn of New Orleans

Our eyes have seen the chaos on the streets of New Orleans.
Bush has failed the people living there and trampled on their dreams,
Failed to see the aged dying, or hear the children's screams.
Our outrage will live on.
Never let this be forgotten,
Never let this be forgotten,
Never let this be forgotten,
Our outrage will live on.

He can fly across the city way up high in Air Force One,
Pose for photos with poor people that he otherwise would shun,
He can lie and make excuses, but still he cannot run
From outrage that lives on.
Never let this be forgotten,
Never let this be forgotten,
Never let this be forgotten,
Our outrage will live on.

For the aid that was too little and too late, he is to blame.
The deaths and all the suffering, his everlasting shame.
He never learned that "President" is more than just a name.
Our outrage will live on.
Never let this be forgotten,
Never let this be forgotten,
Never let this be forgotten,
Our outrage will live on.

The armies of compassion are quite real and they will reach
Out to help the people Bush has offered only hollow speech.
As for Bush himself, there is only one remedy -- impeach!
Or outrage will live on.
Never let this be forgotten,
Never let this be forgotten,
Never let this be forgotten,
Our outrage will live on.

15. Thanks!
I wish the new set of lyrics requested here (see my message 12, below) was coming as quickly as those lyrics did, but those were written between midnight and 1 am one night, with no interruptions, and tonight there've been lots of interruptions...

12. Okay -- first verse and chorus:
In 2005 Bush took a little trip
Out to San Diego, gave a speech beside a ship,
Raised money from the rich for his party on the right.
While on the Gulf New Orleans drowned, Bush strummed to his delight.

He did not care, and the whole damn country saw it.
They can spin and try to change it, but too many people know.
He did not care, and there's no way to redraw it.
He played while people died on the Gulf of Mexico.
