Besides, 42% of Americans believe the press has too much freedom anyway
42% of respondents said the press in America has too much freedom to do what it wants

http://www.mediainfo.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1734342

So let's clamp down of freedom of the press; the other 58% will follow...

Edited on Wed Sep-07-05 02:37 PM by Beaver Tail
To deter and punish terrorist acts in the United States and around the world, to enhance law enforcement investigatory tools, and for other purposes.

They shouldn’t permit that kind of wording in a fucking GYM membership let alone a legal document.

Feingold deserves a medal for his "no"!

Just like the IRW (contrary to some desperate partisan spinners on both sides), which gave b*s* the authority to act when HE decides, based on what HE decides is a threat.

57. Right, sarcasmo. Americans don't even have the protection of
habeas corpus if a president wants to lock them up forever or even execute them as "threats to the state." In fact, Americans now have fewer rights than the Founding Fathers when they rebelled against the tyranny of Great Britain in 1776. They at least were protected by the Magna Carta, which reaffirmed the right to file a writ or petition of habeas corpus when imprisoned by the state.

42. you're right; Blanco's not going to go for this, if only to spite
blivet** and Witt's got nothing to hide. Some of the reporters already there aren't going to want to leave and the media will go ballistic at the idea of being excluded from a story for no good reason other than the administration's desperate need to put a positive spin on things.

Oh, this is going to backfire, big time. If they wanted to take attention away from the forced evacuation and body detail in NOLA, they should have gotten busy elsewhere with something substantial and good, like finding housing for the evacuees or doing something to clean up Mississippi. This just makes it smell like they're waiting for the press to leave so we won't count the bodies as they're rounded up -- or worse yet, so we won't see them shooting everyone left in NOLA. Gosh, some of those "flood" victims don't appear to have drowned, after all. You know what happens when looters get their hands on guns. :sarcasm:

55. FEMA has the power to do that and a lot more
Edited on Wed Sep-07-05 02:58 PM by seemslikeadream
Executive Order Number 12148 created the Federal Emergency Management Agency to interface with the Department of Defense for civil defense planning and funding. An "emergency czar" was appointed. FEMA has only spent about 6 percent of its budget on national emergencies. The bulk of their funding has been used for the construction of secret underground facilities to assure continuity of government in case of a major emergency, foreign or domestic.

http://www.fema.gov/library/eo12148.shtm

Executive Order Number 12656 appointed the National Security Council as the principal body that should consider emergency powers. This allows the government to increase domestic intelligence and surveillance of U.S. citizens and would restrict the freedom of movement within the United States and grant the government the right to isolate large groups of civilians. The National Guard could be federalized to seal all borders and take control of U.S. air space and all ports of entry.

Executive Order 10990 allows the government to take over all modes of transportation and control of highways and seaports.

Executive Order 10995 allows Seizure of all communications media in the United States.

Executive Order 11005 allows seizure of all railroads, inland waterways and storage facilities, public and private.
http://www.disastercenter.com/laworder/11005.htm

Executive Order 11051 specifies the responsibility of the Office of Emergency Planning and gives authorization to put all Executive Orders into effect in times of increased international tensions and economic or financial crisis.

Executive Order 11921 allows the Federal Emergency Preparedness Agency to develop plans to establish control over the mechanisms of production and distribution, of energy sources, wages, salaries, credit and the flow of money in U.S. financial institution in any undefined national emergency. It also provides that when a state of emergency is declared by the President, Congress cannot review the action for six months.

22. That is indeed an intelligent thing to do, after all we don't want the
world to know that the rich and wealthy hate black & poor folks. How would it look, if the world viewed the dead in contaminated waters, while other died from thirst, starvation and lack of medications. Perhaps many many could have been saved if there was an urgency by the bush administration to listen to the local authorities. How would it look to the world that not only Iraq is messed up but the United States can't even take care of its own problems and have to have aid from third world countries. How would it look to others on this planet that the U.S. is turning into a third world country with a man just like Kim Jong Il running it.

33. He needs to hide the heaps of bodies
as they are either put into mass graves or more likely given New Orleans' geography - burned in mass funeral pyres.

It is going to be a grim ugly business - bodies left in 90 degree heat or floating in water for 5-7 days are going to look just awful. If these images get out it will makes *'s weird giggling and odd speeches during his photo op visits look even worse than they do now and could lead people who don't pay attention to such things to think the President is a delusional nut case. So They have to try and keep the press out. I don't think it will work in these days of digital cameras but they don't have much choice.

Media apparently banned from NOLA
Posted in Freedom, Grrr..., HFS!, Law, Media at 12:21 by chris

If the report is true, apparently, Katrina spelled the end of our civil liberties as well as the end of New Orleans.

We are in Jefferson Parish, just outside of New Orleans. At the National Guard checkpoint, they are under orders to turn away all media. All of the reporters are turning they’re TV trucks around.

And the legal justification for this is…?

Banning the media is the only way to suppress knowledge of the body count as the waters recede. Note: this is after FEMA has already told the media not to take any pictures of the dead.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency says it doesn`t want the media taking any pictures of the dead in New Orleans.
The agency is leading the rescue effort in the area and has been sharply criticized for its response to Hurricane Katrina.
On Tuesday, FEMA rejected requests by journalists to go out on boats with rescue crews in the city.
A FEMA spokeswoman said part of the reason was because crews needed the space, adding that, quote, “the recovery of the victims is being treated with dignity and the utmost respect.” She says the agency has requested that “no photographs of the deceased be made by the media.”

This is per se unconstitutional. Illegal. Something a totalitarian state does, not a democracy.

sources.

GAWD I hope it's not true, although FEMA did say no more photos of the dead. Unfortunately, we do have a template for that - in Iraq.

I just poked my head into the other room where the TV is. Nothing said about such a thing yet, although I wasn't there for very long. Then again, if they were ordered out of New Orleans, how much of a spine would they have to say so? And would they go the next step and demand to know why?

Everything that I've seen the bushies do, and pull off successfully because the media machine is in their corner. I've heard many a speculation here and elsewhere that the reason Nixon failed was because the media wasn't with him. He had adversarial journalism out there, and truly skeptical on-air people. Walter Cronkite helped turn the nation against Vietnam because he spoke out one night on the "CBS Evening News" and denounced the war. That was the turning point, since so many millions of Americans invited him into their living rooms for every dinner hour as they ate in front of the TV. OUR dining room table was always pulled out in the middle of the room, in front of the TV, so we could watch the evening news while we ate. We were Huntley/Brinkley viewers, however. They were powerful and soon enough were on the case on Vietnam, but Cronkite was the catalyst. And through the Nixon years, Dan Rather was White House correspondent, and he gave Nixon hell. On him like a dog on a pants leg (no wonder republi-CONS hated him). The likes of which we sure aren't seeing now, even while some of 'em do seem to be waking up.

With this, if it's true, there's no way to know whether these former Rip Van Winkles will stay awake because things are just a little too fishy to ignore. On the other hand, unfortunately, this asking-probing questions and vigorously challenging lying assertions from government mouths is pretty new stuff. Some of 'em aren't practiced in it, and others are just plain rusty. And say some reporter or editor or maybe the executive producer of some big show like the "Nightly News" or "Today" or "Good Morning America" gets a personal phone call from the White House... Or say the brass upstairs does... and then the aforementioned come into possession of a memo from said brass upstairs, telling them to cool it on the bush-bashing... What if they're not experienced enough, or maybe too cowed and intimidated by earlier such incidents, to know they could defy this if they knew in good conscience that withholding information would be against the public interest. Or if they're a bush-supporter themselves and already favorably predisposed toward giving this schmuck yet another free pass...

What if they're too young to have built up any cynicism? I'm really curious about this one because, judging from the coverage and how visibly, audibly, seriously moved some of these reporters were - Jeanne Meserve of CNN and Geraldo Rivera of Pox were driven to tears on the air while trying to describe what they were seeing or had seen. Others like Anderson Cooper and even that old fart Jack Cafferty were defying the government-issue statements and talking points with WHAT THEY HAD PERSONALLY SEEN. Tells me they haven't been sent to many stories like this, or even remotely like this, like generally to a war zone, or maybe to a hospital or some other situation where they actually see this stuff "up close 'n' personal."

You cannot look upon this stuff and not be moved. EVEN IF you're just talking about it here on the net or you're reading somebody else's coverage/commentary on it, or you're seeing the pictures and hearing the natural sound and hearing the pleas and the cries and the anguish on TV and radio. Most of us here have not been there personally, and may not know anybody there at present. But still, you cannot see or hear or read this stuff and be unmoved. The effect is even more powerful and gripping with the audio/video elements added in. So imagine how it is if you ARE physically there and confronting this stuff directly, full-frontal, literally and personally in-yer-face. It's stunning, shocking, and distressing, and it can really shake your foundations. I'm guessing that many of these folks on the air have never covered anything remotely like this. You pretty much have to go to active combat zones to see this kind of reality. Tucker Carlson and Anderson Cooper both remarked in their on-air presentations about the rats they'd observed. Tucker noted the size of his, while Cooper recalled the rats eating the dead woman's body that was lying in the street. These things stay with you, especially if you've never covered stuff like them before. Those who did are pretty old by now, from the Vietnam era, and they all questioned authority because the war and the government's lies about it and the useless carnage (that everyone was allowed to see) taught them to be skeptical. The older ones will remember. The younger ones may still be getting their sea legs and may not be secure enough to defy such a dictate.

If this directive is true, what the press does about it will be key - to whether the status quo returns with th republi-CONS getting away (now literally) with murder, and nothing's questioned or looked into closely; or they keep taking their calcium supplements and start digging deeper, because they now know how to smell a rat, as well as what one looks like close up.

KATRINA'S AFTERMATH
FEMA Wants No Photos of Dead
From Reuters

September 7, 2005

NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. agency leading Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts said Tuesday that it does not want the news media to photograph the dead as they are recovered.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, heavily criticized for its slow response to the devastation caused by the hurricane, rejected journalists' requests to accompany rescue boats searching for storm victims.

An agency spokeswoman said space was needed on the rescue boats.

"We have requested that no photographs of the deceased be made by the media," the spokeswoman said in an e-mail.

84. I just recieved this email this morning
From Mark Crispin Miller. A friend of his wrote:

The reason Bush keeps taking heavy damage on his failure to respond to Hurricane Katrina is not because the media became suddenly more bold or more inquisitive, as is argued in several op-ed pieces around the nation.

Rather, there are two reasons Bush gets hammered each night on the network news and in newspapers all over the world. First, there are no DoD-controlled press pools similar to the ones covering the Iraq War. This lack of government manipulation allows reporters to freely provide on-the-spot live and factual coverage exposing the lies and the incompetence of FEMA, the GOP, and Bush himself. And, second, there is no massive Pentagon propaganda machine set up in New Orleans or other stricken areas to provide their flat-earth version of "balanced" reporting with dozens of press releases and subject matter experts readily available.

Therefore, I predict two things. First, there will be a massive influx of public affairs con artists from military and FEMA-related government agencies into the region who will relentlessly pound home the message that all is OK. And, second, this new propaganda presence will restrict the media with pool coverage or an outright ban on entry into New Orleans, thus allowing the government to dominate the press coverage of the recover with their message all the time. Without coverage of screaming women and children demanding food, Bush's horrible and deadly failure may slowly recede from view as the water is pumped from the new "Lake New Orleans.'

Once this 24/7 Pentagon propaganda team fires up, they'll then confuse the people with a flood of dubious reports that place more blame on the locals with the clear intent to spread the mud and thus make the Federal response appear not as seriously flawed. The DoD press machine will switch the issue from incompetence (blame Bush) to unexpected and overwhelming (blame the locals).

But the bottom line stays the same: Bush Lies, New Orleans Dies. Bush Fails, New Orleans Bails. And to top it off, Al Queda captured a city in Iraq today, as reported by the Washington Post. With catastrophic failures both at home and abroad, please tell me, how bad does it have to get, how many more thousands must die, before Bush is declared incompetent and removed? And citizens we must also reject Bush's neo-con lunatic, John G. Roberts, Jr., from becoming Chief Justice and continuing lunacy for another two generations.

Give it a few days for the major hitters to come in and snuff the press coverage; meanwhile, wait for the press to lose interest and slowly pull out reporters. Be warned that this is coming. Thus, if we don't continuously pound home the message that Bush failed and up to ten thousand people needlessly died, then Bush may get away with yet another terrible crime against humanity.

91. Bush won't be Impeached
.... even if by some miracle they don't fix the election in 2006, where we would regain control of the House (where Impeachment articles originate)

And do you know why?

Because it is the Chief Justice who oversees Impeachment proceedings.

Because the new Chief Justice will most likely be John Roberts.

Cronyism at its worst.

But the media will be more sceptical of it this time, and take a more serious look at the fraud angle rather than largely dismissing it.

Hopefully, the smoking guns become common knowledge this time.

Welcome to a bloated "defense" budget that cannot assist you, let alone "defend" you from a hurricane in the age of science. Welcome to the offensive budget that makes your country dependent on China for daily loans. Welcome to the multicolored ribbons in support of a war that kills your troops—your children, who are not here, not at home to help with their strength, their youth, their bravery, their idealism in pulling you out of the toxic flood waters.

Welcome. Dr. Frankenstein's monster's vengeance is at our door.

111. letter to John

An email I just received from a reader. He's right. Call the White House. 202-456-1414, 202-456-1111. They probably won't listen, but it's time for everyone working there to feel some shame for being part of this conspiracy to dishonor the dead, the dead that THEY caused. If they want to work for Bush, they need to start sharing some of the blame for the deaths he's caused.

Hey there John,

First, thanks for being the voice of conscience through all of this horror we are experiencing here in the south.

I was concerned when I read your comments that the press was being moved out of New Orleans, so I called the White House to voice my concern. I was told by the WH operator that the reason was out of respect for the dead. I told her that I thought it was a bad idea to not chronicle this issue so that we could learn from it, correct what went wrong and make sure there is accountability.

Well the minute the operator heard the buzzword "accountability" she got very testy and insisted that it was not appropriate to show the dead. I told here we saw dead bodies everyday on the news from Iraq and she went a little nuts and said I was "being insensitive." I've got friends I can't find in New orleans and I'm being insensitive? These people need to get real and hear from more Americans.

Please tell people to call 202-456-1414, 202-456-1111 and tell the WH operators that the press need to stay.

Thanks
C...

Because it's not allowed to be used by anyone to fuel paranoia and spread rumours.

It's where people come when they want to hear the truth, and it should be kept reliable and objective.

There's obviously plenty of room on the other boards for whatever you want to put out there.

as legit stories but we do know that the feds have actively denied aid and left people to starve to death in the streets for days. if they are capable of that kind of BRUTAL MURDER they are capable of anything.

they have been caught actively disrupting communications spreading vicious rumors about looting and sending in armed forces who ignored those in need.

and as we both know they are also actively censoring the media.

"but I DO think they have been censoring the media from the get-go."

i guess to some if you don't kill them with explosive force there is no culpability or loss of trust.

making others believe in their "theories" that that they constantly attack the true liberal progressives who are actually doing something to get our country back.

I really must agree with this post by Jeff Brandt from NYC INDYMEDIA:

There are many people who believe the government lied about 911. Of course... they lie about everything. But that's not the same as proven culpability, nor planning and arranging it. It's like the commnent above... "that's the problem with you people, you need PROOF!"

Well, no shit we need proof. That's why the Indypendent is a newspaper and not a conspiroid rag that prints any garbage submitted to it. That's why NYC Indymedia at least ASPIRES to be a source of trust-worthy information and not a playpen for rumor-mongering droolers.

The failure of these newswire stalkers to understand the difference between the rank speculation of racially-tinged conspiracy theories and reporting with veracity is what is at issue.

U.S. agency blocks photos of New Orleans dead
07 Sep 2005 00:56:29 GMT

Source: Reuters

NEW ORLEANS, Sept 6 (Reuters) - The U.S. government agency leading the rescue efforts after Hurricane Katrina said on Tuesday it does not want the news media to take photographs of the dead as they are recovered from the flooded New Orleans area.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, heavily criticized for its slow response to the devastation caused by the hurricane, rejected requests from journalists to accompany rescue boats as they went out to search for storm victims.

An agency spokeswoman said space was needed on the rescue boats and that "the recovery of the victims is being treated with dignity and the utmost respect."

All the more reason to get IMPEACHMENT proceedings started. Doesn't know how to handle crisis - so what if another crisis comes along that IS terrorism? They didn't learn anything from 9/11 but bureaucracy and peeing on turf and usurping power and rewarding cronies?

I think, mainly, they're circling the wagons because they simply don't want to be wrong. bush certainly doesn't. This would ruin his track record for self-proclaimed and Almighty-anointed perfection. I think it may just be a simple as "it's all about me" with him. First priority is how all this impacts him and his chances of getting what he wants out of people. That's why it's all a big PR job and some of the media is now actually calling it as such. What happens to others less fortunate than Mr. Divine Right is their own fault. They don't really count, anyway. They're merely "the help." As ol' bar says "they were underprivileged anyway." Besides, they don't vote for me anyway, so screw 'em.

What I would like to see is for Dem leaders to get off their asses and put out the following bill:

"In view of Article I of the Constitution of the United States of America, which reads:

'Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.'

and in view of Section I of Artice I, which reads:

'All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives.'

this Congress hereby orders that the Executive of the United States shall never, under any circumstances, restrict members of the press from their constitutionally guaranteed free and unlimited access to all places, events, images, groups of people, and any other thing which they may deem of interest; and, further, any and all standing executive orders which currently violate this order are hereby declared null and void."

P.S. That includes banning photographers from photographing coffins and dead bodies, Dickhead!

148. Yes, banning press apparently unconfirmed, but 'requested . . . bodies not
be photographed' is at least published by Reuters. Also, I don't think there is any question that BushCo has for several years ordered(?) requested(?) (certainly almost completely enforced) that no coffins back from Iraq are photographed, and I have no doubt is constantly doing everything it can to prevent access to various other fuckups.

The Congress is not supposed to intimidate the press, and certainly the Executive (ie his majesty Bushroveney) should all the more so be prevented from doing so. IMHO.

144. If the death toll is as high as predicted,
banning the media from photographing the dead might very well be enforced as a total ban of the press. Aren't bodies surfacing throughout the city? This could be really bad.

....like not showing us the hundreds of coffins coming back from Iraq. He doesn't want the 'herd' (Bush voters) to see the tens of thousands of dead bodies floating in the water or left in houses or he may lose more votes? Martial law.

189. Al Franken's explanation is the best:
Liberals look at gov't as they do their spouse -- they love him/her but know that he/she is falible. Conservatives see gov't as Mommy, and Mommy is never, ever wrong. Social conservatives are like small children who, as they are just learning about "rules," insist that the rules be enforced with complete rigidity. They want gov't to protect them from anything that challenges their existing beliefs.

The claim that all media have been banned from New Orleans is unconfirmed and almost certainly untrue. If you want to call and complain that the media is being requested not to photograph bodies, be my guest. But if you call and say that "Bush has banned all media from New Orleans", the folks you call are going to treat you...correctly...as just another crank caller.

onenote

168. Why is this in LBN?
It's a rumor from a blog. AmericaBlog may be one of the AAR sanctioned blogs, but it's still a blog. There's not even a link to the particular blog entry the OP is posting about: http://americablog.blogspot.com/2005/09/breaking-military-stopping-media-from.html

This is ridiculous! Not only is it a blog entry, but it's based off a blog entry on another site and that site is erroring out with a 403 Forbidden error.

What a fucking joke.

184. Let the cover-up begin
Fuck these people. I hope journalists find a way in anyway. I doubt Anderson Cooper and the others who have been doing a fine job so far will stand up for this. At least they will ask the hard questions: What are you trying to hide Mr President? How many people are you going to kill today? And what is the death toll so far? Are you covering your ass? Of course they won't answer these. We all heard Scotty's "We don't want to play the blame game". Well guess what? It is too late. Everyone is already blaming you and when the Dems win the next Congressional elections in a landlide, the impeachment proceedings will begin but not before repealing the Patriot Act and dismantling the Department of Fatherland Security. (I am dreaming I know).

I don't just want the entire Bush Administration and their cronies in Congress in jail. No, I want them to SUFFER. I want them to lose everything- to see their family die in a flood or of cancer or something. I wish all kinds of horrible things to happen to them. I do, I am sorry, I am not a nice person these days. But death is too good for these fuckers.

199. Hmm... I do know of sites that will have pictures, but they will
most definitely be as gruesome or worse than the Iraq war photos. If there are mass graves, it can't be in NOLA, because they are below the water table (sea level). Those living nearby can watch for strange activity by our military that is more secretive than usual. I do wonder why they didn't use heat sensing infrared scopes when they finally did go in there. They could have saved a few of those trapped in their attics. This is beyond a disgrace and a tragedy, IMHO, it's dereliction of duty by our government.

It was probably a rumour that spun off from the true story about FEMA not allowing the journalists to photograph the dead.

I REALLY hope nobody actually called the newswires and/or their reps to complain about a fake story that they heard on DU.
