Rep. Ron Paul votes against Katrina relief

Just because somebody is right on one issue doesn't mean we should give a free pass to their social Darwinist agenda.

9. That's what I was thinking
There's a vote coming up on the 50 billion relief and repubs won't allow for any kind of revamping of FEMA to make it more functional.

8. That's what I'm saying. There must be some reason
that ppl vote against it; something must be in the bill.

7. Ron Paul is very libertarian in his voting
Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 07:25 PM by ISUGRADIA
so anti-war, anti-CAFTA, anti-NAFTA, anti most all federal programs and aid. A laissez faire, 1896 kind of Republican for small government.

That also means he is no progressive: against civil rights laws, social security, medicare, medicaid, any thing other than national defense and post offices more or less. Someone I'd never vote for.

EDIT for spelling

27. I'm down with any Republican who has the cojones to go against
the Emperor. But just want to avoid the impression some may get that he's any kind of liberal. One post a few weeks ago was trying to say he was a progressive which is not true.

13. Thank You Sir!!!
People are swooning over Rep Paul over on another thread. All I got for my trouble of providing factual informaiton about him was a snarky "thanks for sharing". I guess they don't want their love fest interrupted.

FACT: Ron Paul is/was affiliated with the Republican Liberty Caucus, a political group that wants to push a small-l libertarian agenda.

FACT: The RLC affiliated themselves with Reagan Republicans, because at the time they wanted to, as an RLC-er of my acqaintance put it, "fish where the fish are".

FACT: Ron Paul was pro-Nader.

FACT: Ron Paul is virulently anti-choice, which is an awfully funny position for a small-l libertarian, don't you think?

Now, from all of the above, it's easy to see that Ron Paul is simply an opportunist, who is now "fishing where the fish are" on our side because he's gotten all he can from the other side.

Ron Paul wants to drown government in the bathtub just as much as Grover Norquist does. He DOES NOT SPEAK FOR ME.

17. So what's the libertarian agenda on payroll once they get their reduced
gov't rolls down to miniscule? Fatter paychecks for civil servants? Who gets all the money? Do they propose that elected officials do? Where do all the newly unemployed people work once their jobs are removed?

22. He's very good at opposing the war
He doesn't like bush and that's a plus. Other than that I can't think of a kind thing to say about him.

It's fun to send out his anti war speeches to RW types who know nothing about him just to make their heads explode. I suppose that's another good thing.

29. my thoughts exactly
the only reason I could come up with, was the same. Why give money to people who abused it before, and not to those who need it?

30. The last I heard, no rep had *seen* the bill, let alone read it
The ONLY reason to vote for it was political- that it would look bad.

If they were doing their job, everyone would have voted against it. The function of Congress is not to hand the executive a blank check, but to oversee funding.
