The growing buzz in Washington relates to Miss. Governor Haley Barbour’s poised and competent leadership in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Barbour has handled the crisis like, well, like a commander-in-chief, some say.
“When you look at the way Governor Barbour has conducted himself, especially in contrast to the ineptitude displayed by Governor Blanco, you think to yourself – this guy has some special leadership qualities,” a high-level GOP consultant in Washington told me today. “A lot of people in town
are talking about it.”
Governor Barbour’s name was circulating among Republicans as a potential presidential candidate even before the devastation of Hurricane Katrina set in. However, given his highly partisan profile – he was Chairman of the National Republican Committee in the 1990’s and is governor of one of the reddest states in the country – many felt his appeal to mainstream voters would be limited. But given the composure and leadership he has displayed since the hurricane, many leading Republicans are taking a second look.
“Everyone loves Haley Barbour,” another top-flight GOP operative told me. “It’s just that no one ever saw him as a prospective president before. But now we’re seeing that he’s a fellow who keeps his head about him and takes the lead in a time of crisis. It’s the Giuliani effect.”
