Iraq rebuilding under threat as US runs out of money

Rory Carroll in Baghdad and Julian Borger in Washington
Friday September 9, 2005
The Guardian

Key rebuilding projects in Iraq are grinding to a halt because American money is running out and security has diverted funds intended for electricity, water and sanitation, according to US officials.

"We have scaled back our projects in many areas," James Jeffrey, a senior state department adviser on Iraq, told a congressional committee in Washington, in remarks quoted by the Los Angeles Times. "We do not have the money."

5. Some perspective on the money...
Americans have donated $500 MILLION dollars to Katrina relief, seen as AMAZING considering less than 1/5 of that was donated during previous disasters.

Yet $500 MILLION is only 1/400 of what has been spent in Iraq.

Astounding.

8. What did $300BB buys us? Lets add it up.
Plus

+ One old, defanged dictator

Minus

- 1800+ dead Americans...and counting
- 10,000+ causualties....and counting
- 250,000+ innocent Iraqis dead or disabled...and counting
- Oil was $35.00/bbl now going to $70.00/bbl
- A new Islamic state
- millions of ME who hate America
- An international reputation in tatters and our credibility wasted

What we could have done with $300BB

+ Upgrade our ports security
+ Upgarde security of our centralized energy facilities
+ Upgrade our infrasturce...like the flood water controls in NO
+ Invested in alternative/renewable energy sources to cut our dependence on ME oil

All of these things could have created jobs, made us really secure, and that would have helped to ripple and sustain our economy.

The Bush-Republican WOT is DOA. The Project for a New AMerican Century appears to be ending 95 years sooner than these criminals expected.
