Battle of New Orleans, rewritten
Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 10:25 PM by highplainsdem
Bobbieinok asked yesterday (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4685490 ) if anyone was up to rewriting the old Johnny Horton hit, "Battle of New Orlean" (see the original lyrics at http://www.cowboylyrics.com/lyrics/classic-country/battle-of-new-orleans---johnny-horton-14929.html ). I decided to give it a try. I'd never tried rewriting song lyrics till recently, but got some nice responses when I rewrote "Battle Hymn of the Republic" several days ago (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=4600654 ).

This one was more difficult, between interruptions yesterday and a migraine today. But this is what I came up with:

In 2005 Bush took a little trip
Out to San Diego, gave a speech beside a ship,
Raised money from the rich for his party on the right.
While on the Gulf New Orleans drowned, Bush strummed to his delight.

Bush did not care, and the whole damn country saw it.
They can spin and try to change it, but too many people know.
He did not care, and there's no way to redraw it.
He played while people died on the Gulf of Mexico.

They did a fly-by so Dubya could look down
And tell us that he knew it was far worse upon the ground.
They still thought a photo-op was all that it would take.
They never dreamed we'd see it as too little and too fake.

So Bush went south, he toured rubble and he lied,
And posed for pictures hugging some poor people while they cried.
He bragged about his efforts with a smirk upon his face,
But people saw his failure as a national disgrace.

Bush did not care, and the whole damn country saw it.
They can spin and try to change it, but too many people know.
He did not care, and there's no way to redraw it.
He played while people died on the Gulf of Mexico.

Now they run from the polls and they run from the critics.
They run from reality, something they'll never know.
They run so hard, but the facts will always trip 'em.
Bush played while people died on the Gulf of Mexico.

Pelosi let them have it with both barrels and we cheered.
The Rummy-Condi-Laura-Dick parade was just too weird.
Compassionate conservatism shown for what it's worth --
With them, it's just a mask to hide the scum of the earth.

Bush did not care, and the whole damn country saw it.
They can spin and try to change it, but too many people know.
He did not care, and there's no way to redraw it.
He played while people died on the Gulf of Mexico.

1. Good!
It pales next to my "City of Louisiana."

The City of Louisiana
with apologies to the late Steve Goodman

Remembering the City of Louisiana,
Michael Chertoff and his complexion pale
Fifteen parishes and countless stupid bureaucrats,
Three federal agencies all off them up for sale.
All along the southbound odyssey
The feds pulled out of responsibility
They rolled past flooded houses, farms and fields.
Passin' poor people that have no names,
Rescue centers full of old black folk
And the graveyards of those future dreams.

CHORUS:
Good morning America how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the disaster Certoff calls The City of Louisiana,
I'll be gone five hundred years 'fore I'm remembered by none.

Now we need a picture of General Jackson with Bush's smirking face.
