Are there less cars on the road in your neighborhood?

I've noticed a distinct reduction of traffic on my street in the evenings after rush hour traffic dies down.

We are conserving every drop of gas and make only necessary trips in the car - walking and biking much more.

2. We went to Cracker Barrell

last night and the number of people there was unusually light. Normally at 6-7pm the place is packed. We got right in and in 15 minutes it was almost empty. After 7:15 I asked the waitress if gas prices was keeping away and she said "No, business usually picks up after 7" an obvious lie.

And people are driving with a vengeance. I see more road rage, more erratic driving, more accidents. I drive 2 hrs a day on major highways, and it has been the grimmest week I can remember.

Also, people are spending like there's no tomorrow (hm?) On a trip to the shopping mall for school supplies last weekend, parking was impossible, drivers impatient, and people going out literally with carloads of STUFF...all kinds of stuff, not just the typical back-to-school stuff. Giant Brookstone and Williams-Sonoma shopping bags full of who knows what.

Costco was the same way, with both staples and non-essentials.

The whole atmosphere of desperation makes me uneasy.

In the US people are now paying around 80 cents (Australian) a litre for petrol. I just filled up my tank and it cost $1.46 a litre. It'd cost even more if I was living in a rural area, so I don't exactly get the complaints of Americans about high petrol prices, except that they've been so used to super-low prices that a rise to merely low prices is a shock to the system...

18. What I noticed yesterday on the way home was not so much the

traffic but a card dealership which has for the last years had row upon row of shiny new SUVs and minivans lined up in the front of their lot amid scads of balloons and streamers. There were literally no SUVs or minivans to be seen in the lot. It was all sedans or compacts.

23. I don't necessarily see fewer cars

but I did buy my first bus pass in like, 30 years and have been riding local transit. Actually, not a bad experience at all. I get some exercise walking to/from the bus stops and I'm netting a savings of about $100.00 a month in gas. Anyway, the "regulars" tell me that they've definitely seen an increase in the number of people riding the bus.

I saved up all my errands for yesterday, and drove the ten miles to town. I was shocked! I asked the woman in the bank where everyone was. She replied that the yearly Labor Day festival had just ended, and they'd all left town. I told her it looked like half the residents had gone with them. It was quiet, and very weird.

On a side note, I was literally chased into town by a large SUV with GW stickers. I have bumperstickers, and this guy road up my ass, along side, and braked in front of me for no apparent reason for ten miles. :scared:

I'm usually a bus person anyway, and I had expected to see a great number of newbies on the bus, but only a few materialized. I expect more next week when summer is really over. A lot of people took vacay this week.
