Children's author Dirk Wales talks about Owney, a dog who during the late 19th century became the rail mascot for the U.S. Post Office after taking shelter inside the Albany, NY post office. During the event, held at the National Postal Museum in Washington, DC, Mr. Wales reads from his book about Owney and discusses how and why he became interested in the dog.

Author and photographer Dirk Wales is the author of "Love Scenes," a book of short stories for adults. He is currently worknig on a novel. "A Lucky Dog" is his first children's book.

Rose Guilbault recounts her childhood growing up as a Mexican immigrant in California in her memoir, "Farmworker's Daughter." The author explains that she became a farmworker's daughter shortly after her mother divorced her biological father in Sonora Mexico and eventually remarried and moved to California's Salinas Valley. Ms. Guilbault details her struggles to learn English and to eat the same foods and play with the same toys as her American schoolmates. This event was hosted by Book Passage in Corte Madera, California.

Rose Guilbault is vice president of corporate affairs at AAA of Northern California, Nevada, and Utah. She is also the chairwoman of the Board of Governors for the Commonwealth Club of California. Ms. Guilbault was editorial director for KGO-TV (ABC San Francisco) and the creator of the television series "Profiles of Excellence." "Farmworker's Daughter" is her first book.

Author and journalist Dave Zirin makes the case that professional sports in America are closely tied to radical politics, as they have been for decades. In his new book, "What's My Name Fool?: Sports and Resistance in the United States," the author chronicles the relationship between athletes and activism, past and present. Mr. Zirin tells the stories of politically radical athletes of the 1960s such as Olympic sprinter John Carlos and boxer Muhammad Ali as well as those of today, including former NFL player Pat Tillman who joined the Army Rangers and was killed in Afghanistan during the War on Terror. The author contends that aspects of American sports are often reflective of larger issues in American society such as militantism, social activism, racism, and resistance.

Dave Zirin is the editor of the Prince George's Post in Prince George's County, Maryland for which he writes the weekly column Edge of Sports (www.edgeofsports.com). He is also a writer for The Source magazine and a senior writer for Basketball.com.

Mr. de Blij asserts that the only way for America to protect itself from these challenges is to understand the world's geography. This event was hosted by the World Affairs Council in Washington, DC.

Harm de Blij is Distinguished Professor of Geography at Michigan State University. He was the Geography Editor on ABC's "Good Morning America" for seven years and is an honorary life member of the National Geographic Society.

William Langewiesche is currently a national correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly magazine. He covered the World Trade Center cleanup in a three-part series which was published as the book "American Ground." He also detailed the last flight of the shuttle Columbia. Mr. Langewiesche was a professional pilot for many years. His other books include "Cutting for Sign" and "Sahara Unveiled."

Ms. Fontana describes explaining the tragedy to her then five-year-old son and becoming a leader in a circle of grieving women and the president of the 9/11 Widows and Victims' Family Association. This event was hosted by Old First Reformed Church in Brooklyn, New York.

Marian Fontana is the president of the 9/11 Widows and Victims' Families Association. She is a trained comedian and actress.

Michael Chorost talks about experiencing hearing loss in his memoir, "Rebuilt." In the 1960s, Mr. Chorost was diagnosed with a severe hearing deficit and became dependent on hearing aids. In 2001 he went totally deaf and had a tiny device called a cochlear implant surgically placed behind his left ear. The implant receives electrical signals from the magnetic headpiece that sticks to his head. The author recounts getting used to the device and the initial problems he faced while attempting to talk on a cell phone and hold conversations in crowded rooms. This event was hosted by the University Book Store in Seattle, Washington.

Geologist, author, and Princeton University professor Kenneth Deffeyes writes that world oil production is no longer increasing in his new book, "Beyond Oil: The View From Hubbert's Peak." The title of the book comes from petroleum geologist M. King Hubbert, who formulated that the world's oil production would reach its peak in 2000 and begin to decline rapidly until the global fossil fuel supplies went dry. Mr. Deffeyes believes that the world's oil production would peak at the close of 2005 and that the eventual absence of fossil fuels would have a devastating and potentially catastrophic effect on world economies. The book also lists the potential replacement fossil fuel energy sources and the ways in which they can be utilized effectively.

Kenneth Deffeyes is a geologist and professor emeritus at Princeton University. He is also the author of "Hubbert's Peak: The Impending World Oil Shortage."

Former Speaker of the House Jim Wright's latest book is "The Flying Circus," a memoir about his service in WWII. A party celebrating the release of the book was held at the U.S. Capitol in late July. In attendance were: House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), Rep. Chet Edwards (D-TX), former Rep. Martin Frost (D-TX), Lindy Boggs, historian Robert Remini, and others. Speaker Wright talked to the guests and made brief remarks.

Jim Wright represented Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1955 to 1989 (the last two years as speaker of the house). Speaker Wright is the author of "Reflections of a Public Man," the sales of which led to charges of ethics violations by the House ethics committee and ultimately led to Speaker Wright's resignation. He is currently a distinguished lecturer in political science at Texas Christian University.
