You know how the right-wingers are always telling us that the government should have no role in the economy and that state interventions in the economy are not only wrong but downright evil. Well here's an interesting passage from a text I'm reading for my economics class. It's from "The Economy" by C.T. Kurien page 151.
"In view of these wide-ranging and deeply entrenched economic functions of the state, anyone who claims that a capitalist economy is one that functions without any external props and influences, or that a capitalist economy functions best when all state interventions are removed, is either fooling himself or trying to fool others. So crucial indeed is the dependence of a capitalist economy on the state that a writer bluntly but rightly says: 'Remove the regime of capital and the state would remain, although it might change dramatically; remove the state and the regime of capital would not last a day'(Heilborner, 1988: 105)."
The author of this is text is a supporter of capitalism but recognizes its limitations. Unlike Rush and the gang who see capitalism as the savior for all that ails us.
