I didn't even hear about it. She's several states away and called me about a health issue that may be hereditary. In the conversation she offhandedly mentions how her ex-hubby is now stalking her since the divorce. (good news and bad news rolled into one)

whu-what? I say. it happened two weeks ago that it got finalized.

This is the repuke that constantly sends me right wing email even though I've politely asked him to remove me from his mailing lists. I've been polite thus far because I love my sister.

I don't have to be polite anymore! heh.

he's a complete racist and does nothing but badmouth minorities, gays and liberals endlessly. He was at one time a republican office holder (but some nondescript something or other like road maintenance or dog catcher or something).

The bad news is my sister has a heart of gold, but because of our childhood, she always links up with abusive jerks. I cringe every time she says she is dating or marrying someone. It always ends badly. I've tried to help her but she is stuck in that syndrome of enabling abusers.

But at least she divorced the asshole! woohoo!

btw, she's not republican but subliminated her political views while around him.

3. Out of curiosity, how old is your sister?
And when you say childhood, have you ever read a book called "Toxic Parents"?

she's 52, and is a grandmother several times over.
So its kinda hard to for me to tell her what to do.
apparently, though, If I married her, I could order her about at will

grrrrr.

edit: (sorry, didn't mean to bring incest into it, making a point at how she becomes a doormat for these jerks)

9. I was just asking because this book has helped some friends of mine
I was lucky, grew up in a Norman Rockwell painting and I'm grateful for it but many of my friends throughout the years have had very different experiences.

You can pick up a copy very cheaply $2 on Amazon, check it out and think about giving it to your sis or just sending her a copy. It's NEVER too late to address that pain and move forward in a positive direction, never.

I hope nothing but the best for you and your sister in the future, and I'm happy she's away from a monster, but be sure she takes his stalking and threats seriously and STRONGLY encourage her to file for restraining orders and get to know her local pd.

5. May I offer advice on her getting a weapon
and also two or three 70+ lb dogs. Dogs are a wonderful deterrent for violence, and provide warning as well. Hate to hear of people getting stalked. Baseball bat in the car is good too, or tire iron, or one of those large cop flashlights. All that, and a good dose of "NO one has the right to hurt me or scare me" too. NO ONE has the right, no husband, no boyfriend, no one.

6. Lucky you.
I managed to keep my visits to the Repub relatives down to three hours on Thanksgiving per year. But it's getting more challenging now that his sister bought a condo in Naples and has become a snowbird; and also, one of the nieces is getting married this year.

But, I did manage to wiggle out of a wedding shower this weekend, so I may be on a roll.

By the way, the reason why I avoid them is because they won't listen to a reasonable debate, considering it bleeding-heart intellectualism. Instead, they're ruled by emotional bias and collective thinking. The only way I can get through is to descend into sputtering anger, and I just can't bring myself to do it. I lose a part of myself when I find myself hating them, as much as they hate everyone else. So I avoid the whole mess as often as possible.

7. Unfortunatly I still have a few repug friends that I meet with regurlary..
...over the game table. But so far we have stuck to a definate "no politics" rule. But lately that's been harder to stick to lately. And after this I fear that rule may be gone.

Oh well it was nice while it lasted. :)
