Bush nearly invoked the Insurrection Act?
"WASHINGTON, Sept. 8 - As New Orleans descended into chaos last week and Louisiana's governor asked for 40,000 soldiers, President Bush's senior advisers debated whether the president should speed the arrival of active-duty troops by seizing control of the hurricane relief mission from the governor."

SNIP

'To seize control of the mission, Mr. Bush would have had to invoke the Insurrection Act, which allows the president in times of unrest to command active-duty forces into the states to perform law enforcement duties. But decision makers in Washington felt certain that Ms. Blanco would have resisted surrendering control, as Bush administration officials believe would have been required to deploy active-duty combat forces before law and order had been re-established.'

12. The old capital building of Germany
Hitler had it set on fire to coerce the government into giving him 'emergency powers' which he used to become a dictator,

and its spelled Reichstag. There is some debate as to whether or not the Nazis were really to blame, although many major Hitler biographers feel there is enough evidence to conclude he ordered his SS to do it. Of course the communists were blamed.

2. Same as martial law.
He was trying to blackmail Blanco into agreeing with it.

Thank GOD she didn't go along.

That's why she hired James Lee Witt to handle the mess, didn't you know?

I'm rushing.

Last night on the news I heard someone say:

You know I've been a Bush supporter all along, but when we have American's dying anywhere in the world, the President should not be taking 6 weeks vacation.

Gotta love it - evidently his eyes have been opened. Wish I knew who it was that said it, but I walked in on the end and didn't even see his face.

:)

7. Something stinks about this. The last time I had this gut feeling
it was in reference to Jeff Gannon.

I can't seem to find anyone who can tell me if that Insurrection Act would also give Bush full powers to assign reconstruction bids. If so, then we have an economic hitman ploy in play.

9. Yeah, it's claiming he couldn't otherwise "speed the arrival" of troops
who were just waiting for the order to go. It's baloney.

8. why couldn't they just treat this as all other large natural disasters
Edited on Fri Sep-09-05 11:10 AM by kenny blankenship
have been treated in the past, and send in assets PROMPTLY to assist in relief efforts and to keep order, instead of treating it like an opportunity to grab power and point guns at people? You seriously mean to tell me that they delayed sending in aid while they mulled the possibilities of declaring Louisiana to be a fucking renegade province or something? That's not how a sane person reacts...

This was a large scale natural disaster with the usual humanitarian crisis and law enforcement issues--why treat it like it was Iraq?

(Like what's going on in Iraq is some kind model of success to follow elsewhere...much less here at home with our own citizens!)

The people of this country are in danger as long as these power-crazy thugs are in the White House.
