Who will be the "Jersey Girls" of New Orlean's Katrina catastrophe?
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0401-02.htm

These were the widows of 9-11 who dogged the investigation of 9-11 looking for answers and refusing to let this administration investigate themselves or sweep the investigation under the rug.

Who will insist that this disaster have an independent commission to investigate it and make sure that it is done in a thorough and transparent manner?

8. And since she is a gorgeous white supemodel, people will listen to her
No slam on ms. Goodacre.. just that our society is warped that way towards giving more credence to entertainers than ajust about anyone else.

12. I haven't heard anything from him
Where have you seen him make comments?

Is he from the area? Nevermind. A quick Google of <harry connick hometown> answered my question.

Has he been particularly outspoken or critical of any of the "authorities", or has his response been more victim/recovery-focused?

4. Won't happen, unless they're white and well-off.
The victims of this disaster will have nobody advocating for them in our congressional halls.

They've been swept under so many rugs... to Texas, Minnesota, Utah, Massachusetts.

5. It has to happen, even if it's the white and well-off that have to
do it.

10. I do agree with you.
I guess I'm having surges of cynicism.

I clearly recognize that there are a number of women who are raising their voices, and they have been for some time. I was thinking of their number just yesterday, and I felt inspired and somewhat unsurprised. If these women were to work in league with each other... I just wish they would, I don't know, get together.

Hell, why doesn't Oprah invite these women on television? Commit a week to big-mouthed women? Can we see Bunnatine Greenhouse on Oprah? Can we see Cindy Sheehan? And she could, of course, provide equal air time to women from the other side of the debate. This would have to be on a different day, of course. The point is to show both sides of the argument, not to have the argument itself. The point is to educate her viewers, and to help them develop an educated and self-formed opinion -- a much better alternative to regurgitating sound-bites and talking points.

Sounds fair to me, and I think it sounds like good television.

I have to confess, however, that I don't own a tv and don't watch it.

7. Goodly number of important liberal causes have been spearheaded by those
white, well off females. Don't discount them. Win their hearts to your cause and they have time, resources to push it.
