GOD DAMN! I just got off the phone with my mother....
She started spouting off about how no one could have foretold what would happen...blah,blah,blah...

I lost it, I freaking lost it.

Just let her have it with both barrels. The whole nine yards.

Then she had the temerity to ask me why I was so angry (read: you're Canadian, it didn't happen here. What's the fuss?)

Why? :nuke:

BECAUSE BETWEEN 10,000 AND 25,000 PEOPLE ARE DEAD. NOT BLACKS, NOT WHITES, NOT CANADIANS, NOT AMERICANS, BUT PEOPLE! AND THEY WOULDN'T HAVE DIED IF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE IN CHARGE WOULD HAVE GOT OFF THEIR ASSES AND DID THE JOBS THEY WERE PAID TO DO!

THAT'S WHY.

4. Burst into tears...
...asked why I was trying to make her suffer...

I told her she wasn't suffering, she was merely uncomfortable. The people of New Orleans, the people of Mississipi and the people of Alabama are the ones who are suffering.

My mother, Catholic martyr to the core.

10. I have Republican family
in SOUTH ALABAMA!! They also spout the same crap, even though I remind them that they were only about 50 miles from being decimated! They don't have time to help any of the evacuees, and AGAIN I remind them that they were only 50 miles from being evacuees! I have given up for now...We have too much to get done to help our fellow humans recover and rebuild. I don't have the strength to fight family. That is what Holidays are for!!

14. Hey, thanks for taking the time to reply...
I am really fighting this feeling of dismay that has come over me...so much misery in the world. I wish I could get to work helping you folks out down there in some physical way! I am donating money and BLOOD to the Red Cross. Oh, and welcome to DU, this is the place to be right now. God Bless.

12. me too
My mom lives north of houston and has 4 double bed upstairs in 3 bedrooms. One is like a suite, the other is a large game room with two double beds and the last is just a small room with a double futon. Empty nest and I recommended she offer up space for a family or two. They have a great house with a pool and I know kids would love it. What does she say???

"I wonder what they'll do to my 'stuff' when I'm not here..."

I had to let her know nothing because they are grateful you have given them a place to live.

Told me Oprah jumped all over a local news reporter for playing the 'blame game' and this isn't the time.
I'll let her have it and suddenly she needed both hands to cook and needed off the phone.

13. Sorry to hear about your blow up!
Edited on Fri Sep-09-05 01:31 PM by Verve
I can't talk to my mom (dad or siblings either). I've had some MAJOR blow ups with my family over politics (mainly Bush) and they never resolved anything. We've learned to disagree and shut up. In fact, my mother and I hung up in disagreement over Katrina just the other day. (Why didn't they all leave when they were asked, implying it was their fault, etc, etc.) I tried to set her straight yet I don't think I got through to her. I've begun to realize I can't change their stubborn backward views and I think they've resigned to the fact that they have a liberal in the family.

Although difficult at times, I've learned that family is one of the most important things in life. We didn't choose them, we don't necessarily have to like everything they do, but it's important to love them anyhow.

17. See post #4...
...she also berated me for being judgemental (I'm always telling her not to judge others).

I told her I wasn't judging these people, I was judging their actions and found them wanting. I told her that there was a difference between judging someone and demanding accountability and what I wanted was accountability.

Now I know I'm a Canadian and I know some would say I don't have a right to judge the Government of the United States. Thing is, it affects me in hundreds of small ways. It also affects me as a human being, something that crosses all geo-political lines. And as a human being it's my Goddess given right to have an opinion and to express it.

And DAMNIT, I'M GOING TO DO IT!
