Penguins evacuated
I could not resist that subject title!

Seriously, penguins, sea otters, sea dragons, and a 250 lb turtle have been moved out of the New Orleans Aquarium of the Americas. That's really good news!

Sadly most of their fish died. Sad but not surprising -- fish environments are demanding to maintain, especially saltwater fish-only tanks without live rock. Without biological filtration, ammonia builds up and kills them. There could have been other variables like high temperatures and low dissolved oxygen levels. I'm a fishkeeper; I adore my sweet funny little fishies. I've been thinking a lot about what I'd do if I had to evacuate with them. It's possible with a couple of coolers, portable air pumps, and daily water changes. They'll be pretty unhappy but alive till I can get them to new tanks.

1. I was worried about those penguins and the alligator snapping turtle

and the other reptiles and non-fish species. The penguins were of the non-arctic variety.

That was the most beautiful Aquarium. We loved going there and to the zoo.

Sorry poor fish. RIP.

on edit: I didn't see the alligator sanpping turtle mentioned. It was a sea turtle that they saved. They probably didn't have to evacuate the snapping turtle. It and the gators are swamp dwellers. The two white gators are amazing!
