New Orleans Animal Rescue in Peril.
Help urgently required!

Contact: Dana Nesbitt (President)
Humane Society, LA
Cell: 901 268 4610 Email: humaneLA@cs.com

NEW ORLEANS, SEP 8, 2005. Despite the heroic efforts of volunteers and animal groups from both Louisiana and around the country, time is running out for the animals trapped in New Orleans, after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Help is desperately required to rescue animals trapped in the flooded ruins of New Orleans or roaming the streets in hungry packs.

Help is also urgently required to help care for the hundreds of animals rescued and located in shelters with no power or running water.
Here's how you can help!

-BOAT OWNERS! Boats are urgently needed. Flat bottomed boats, canoes, anything that can be used to travel around the flooded streets of New Orleans, and which is big enough to hold rescued animals. You must be able to transport the boat to the Louisiana SPCA (http://www.la-spca.org /) shelter established at 9093 St. Landry Rd., Gonzales, LA 70737. HSUS volunteer Linda Nealon can be contacted at Gonzales on (225) 647 0712, but that line is very busy. Bring a boat and it WILL be used.

-ANIMAL CARE AND CONTROL PROFESSIONALS. Anyone with professional animal rescue, control, veterinarians, vet techs - particularly those with water hazard training--would be extremely welcome to come help search and rescue animals from the hazardous flood conditions. Come to the Gonzales shelter.

- NEW ORLEANS NATIVES. We need people familiar with the backstreets of New Orleans to help navigate the backstreets of the City. Come to the Gonzales shelter.

- OWNERS OF LARGE TRUCKS: We need people, preferably with ‘official-looking" vehicles (flashing lights, the name of a rescue agency painted on the side will help rescuers navigate in the city) to help transport rescued animals out of New Orleans to Gonzales. Come to the Gonzales shelter.

- BRING SOME SUPPLIES! Gonzales desperately needs the following: water proof walkie talkies and flashlights, D batteries, insect repellent, sunscreen, waders, animal medical supplies, heavy duty gloves for handling wildlife, and containers full of gasoline. Bring them to Gonzales! They are urgently required.

-POST STUFF. The US Postal Service is supplying Gonzales again. Mail higher value, lower volume items to the shelter like meds, etc.

-CALM DOWN DISTRESSED PETS. Our rescued dogs are freaking out. If you can even just drop by for an afternoon with some dog treats, chew-toys and "greenies" and pet a few distressed pooches, and take some for a walk that would be a tremendous help.

The Humane Society of Louisiana, St. Francis Animal Shelter and Best Friends Animal Sanctuary are jointly operating a huge emergency shelter at 115 Obed Magee Rd., Tylertown, MS 39667, where rescued animals are cared for in the longer term, before being adopted.

-HELP US TRANSPORT animals from Gonzales to Tylertown. Bring large vehicles suitable for animal transport to Gonzales.
The Tylertown Shelter has hundreds of animals but hardly any volunteers to look after them. There is no electricity or running water. There are no landline phones. We desperately need helping hands. You cannot post supplies to Tylertown, as the US postal service has not resumed in the area.

-LOOK AFTER RESCUED PETS. Come down to Tylertown, but bring your own food, clothes, tents, medical supplies and enough gasoline to drive here and back home. Think of this as a camping expedition with a purpose. We do not have the resources to support volunteers. People with experience of caring for small mammals and exotics like spiders and birds are especially welcome.

-BRING YOUR CONTRACTOR SKILLS. We are trying to erect new portable buildings to house the vast number of animals being moved to Tylertown. We need people with the skills and tools to erect fences and buildings, wire up generators, etc.

-BRING BUILDING SUPPLIES, GENERATORS, GASOLINE etc. Anyone who can supply portable building kits, fencing etc., please bring it to Tylertown.

-WE NEED AIR CONDITIONING. If you have AC units which can run off generators and could bring them down help set them up that would vastly improve the miserable hot conditions for the distressed rescues.

-BRING SUPPLIES. At Tylertown we need walkie talkies, flashlights, D batteries, insect repellent, sunscreen, animal medical supplies, heavy duty gloves for handling wildlife, and containers full of gasoline.
The Humane Society of Louisiana"s Executive Director, Jeff Dorson is at Tylertown and he can be reached on his cell phone at 901-268-4432. However phone reception is patchy in Tylertown and Jeff is very busy.

PLEASE NOTE: We are desperately short of people, so anyone helping out must ensure that they can look after themselves, and have enough gasoline to get back home.

PLEASE HELP US BY DONATING:
The Humane Society website is now back online at http://www.humaneLA.org and is ready to accept credit card donations.
Alternatively, send checks (made out to The Humane Society of Louisiana) to our emergency temporary office at P.O. Box 238, Sharon Center OH 44274.

3. I don't care what anybody says...
These poor babies need rescuing now! There has been so much confusion about who is allowed in to rescue and where to go to help, that it has been very difficult to keep track of who to communicate with and coordinate with. I have been forwarding all info that I get to HSUS and Best Friends, as they are the two groups I work with.

I have posted this on Richard Pryor's website which at times has quite a bit of traffic.

6. The sad thing is ...
... there are scarcely enough resources to deal with the humans, let alone the companion animals. The outrage is that there should be more than enough resources for rescuing humans and animals. In economies of scale, this isn't hard to do ... unless you're pinching pennies to a dangerous extreme.

This isssue will have to be addressed by FEMA. Yes, by all means, people come first, but animal rescue is a marginal cost. But then again, it appears as though FEMA has neglected everything, including animal rescue.

7. exactly
I had mentioned in another post that the LA-SPCA got their animals out of NO before the hurricane hit. The moved them in climate-controlled trucks to Houston.

I think the SPCA should teach classes about evacuation at FEMA.

27. That's the truth...
More to the point, the people in the ivory towers need to understand that when you lose everything - EVERYTHING - a much-loved pet can be a bridge back to normalcy. Why? Because WE take care of THEM. We have a reason for existence...even when everything else is gone. We need to find shelter, food, and safety for our companions. It gives us purpose and meaning. So it's for an animal...so what? It gets us moving, thinking, breathing again. Thankfully.

I live for the day when people understand the amazing role pets play in human lives.

11. sigh! I can relate!
Just got out of credit counseling. Donated all I could with available cash. But I had to commit the sin of using the credit card to send stuff to Veterans for Peace who are doing some really important work in Covington (http://www.vfproadtrips.org/). This stuff is time-critical. I can work on paying later.

16. I bet it does mean that.
In the '70s, when one couldn't count on being able to find gas, I used to keep a full jerrycan in the car--5 gal. was plenty reserve for my (then) VW. Perhaps the same thing would work for you?

17. That might work, except that it scares me to death to have a container of
gasoline inside my car. 5 Gallons would probably take my CRV at least a 100 miles, though.

20. I'm sorry, by 'in my car' I really meant 'in the trunk'
Which is where the gas tank was in a VW anyway. I too would have been afraid to keep it in the car with me, because of the fumes. (Though in the '60s in Germany I carried 2 jerrycans in the back of my VW microbus and the fumes never bothered me, so maybe I was worrying for nothing--they were very well-sealed military-style jerrycans.)

Great gift you've given yourself - :yourock:

I've been thinking about buying the following for all my friends' Birthday and Christmas gifts for the year:

A donation to the Katrina rescue/relief fund of their choice.

I think my friends would be very happy with that. At this time, buying/receiving another electronic gadget or arts & crafts doodad just seems sooooooooo beside the point.

From what at least one person has told me, you can ship any supplies you have to donate - particularly stuff on their 'needs' list - to the shelter too if you can't go down there.

I'm going to pack up and ship a few things to them. (unopened/unused insect repellent, sunblock, flashlights, 'D' batteries, some kitty dishes and a litterbox, etc). It ain't much but every bit helps - if everyone sends something on their needs list. The message does say the USPS is now working and running down there.

I wish so much that I could be there, and help to ease the stress of the rescued animals. If just to play with them, give them some human attention, exercise them.

Thank you so much, Triana, for bringing their cause to our attention.

It breaks my heart every day. :-(

31. likewise
One of my employees saw on TV how a dog helped a child get to safety, then the bus driver wouldn't allow the dog to be evacuated with the child. That dog was a comfort..and a life saver. The story motivated her to get a collection up with her friends to donate to the Humane Society. I had already donated to the Humane Society as a first reaction, then I donated to LSU's Vet School because they are providing medical care to animals of Katrina--free of charge.

36. Companion animals are very important at times like these...
...particularly to children, sick and elderly folks. If they'd allow people to take their pets when they ask them to leave NO - a LOT more of them would go - and they'd get the pets and people out that way. I guess that makes too much sense though. Grrrrrrrrr!

The bast*ards would rather shoot them, I presume. That just makes me sick.
