The Sydney Morning Herald (Saturday September 10) Bush tries to make up lost ground p15 ...
* "President George bush is under a sustained attack for his response to the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina, with a unified front of Democratic leaders claiming that he is hell-bent on a cover-up..."
* "The Democrats' leader in the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, accused Mr Bush of being "oblivious, in denial" over the trgedy."
* "Senator Hillary Clinton joined the attack in a series of television appearances, describing the Bush Administrations's response as dismal."
An ill wind blows his way... p30
* It has put in sharp focus the short-comings of the Bush Presidency: its divisiveness, its lack of domestic vision beyond a commitment to small government - largely unfulfilled - and conservative social values.
* Then came Katrina, and it was clear that for all the planning and the billions of dollars spent setting up the Department of Homeland Security, the response by all levels of government to the disaster playing out hour after hour on national television was a shambles.
All of the above suggests to me that the '08 Democratic Presidential Campaign should be centred on one simple premise... "ITS THE CANDIDATE'S COMPETENCE STUPID!
