Damn. I feel like it's 1920.
Finally put my finger on the numbness. I see and hear what people are saying on tv and radio and it looks and feels like 1920.

11. Aack! I wasn't whining about myself!
...this is a stellar explosion on a downward spiral which was already well established. My depression-era Grandparents have made similar comments - before this month.

Over the past 5 years I have watched people in the airline industry lose their jobs, my father is a retiree from a company that was General Motors until about 5 years before he retired - he just got screwed out of about 80% of his health benefits...I just bought my grandmother $200 worth of medical support stockings because they cost $20 a pair and she was wearing them in non-functional shreds because she (a depression child) couldn't bear to pay that much for knee-highs...and I watched people's portfolios cut by 75% because the bubble burst (I worked for Intel & had all my money in Intel stock...diversify, diversify, diversify)

My reference to 1931? Davis-Beacon Act...collapses of banks...I was actually reacting from a pre-August 2005 mindset.

Big deal about my own personal loss. Didn't mean to gripe, see how it could be taken that way.

a few sentences....don't take anything here too personal, take much with a grain of salt, and always keep the dialog going. by the way, that's a wonderful story about your family.

16. I completely agree that we are on a fast track
to the bottom of that proverbial hatbasket in hell. I was being sincere when I sympathized with your misfortunes, my life too has had many downs in the past few years. Seeing Meanspin heading for the hills makes me think that things will get worse soon. But meanwhile, I am not walking waist deep in toxic water so things are definitely on the up here. BTW again, welcome to DU. :toast:

but in all honesty, I don't see how the economy can withstand all that is happening ( defects, energy prices lack of good jobs)...but yet the stock market is going up. Oh forgive me, ......welcome to D/U.

5. Yeah, when you hear that evacuees were stopped by gun toting
bigots from leaving NOLA on foot, it does seem that way doesn't it?

My God. Where am I? What fresh hell is this?

10. THis is what I'm referring to. This is the powderkeg of the whole thing.
A lot of people died in that center. Didn't they say there were bodies in the freezer?

8. You might be speaking of the impact Katrina has had, but
we got our property tax bill today. The price of living in our house has gone up $1500 bucks. Looks like we'll be stepping down. Fortunately, the economy is booming, so that temp job I'm holding onto will no doubt morph into something stable and permanent that pays more than a few bucks an hour. :sarcasm:
