I am watching music on my television, and I believe.

I am reading stories, and poems, and I believe.

I have not believed for a long time now. I tried so hard, and I worked so hard to make myself believe, but deep within I could not let go and ride the bike on two wheels.

The hate was everywhere, it seemed, so I went to Texas and met a woman who believed. I watched her, and I learned from her. I went back again, and I watched a tree grow where an acorn stood moments before. I helped water it, for I knew it would grow very big.

I am watching people die and people curse them for their stupidity, but I am not concerned, for I am watching other things that dwarf the hate. I will go, soon, to where the people need the help, and I will sweat and cry and ache and cry some more. But I will believe.

We will beat this hate that surrounds us now – I can feel it. It is not who we are as a people. Hate holds sway now, but as truth is being spoken to power the believers grow. The tree is a forest now – bring water.

I believe. I truly do.

I was just wondering today how to get an "I believe" thread going in GD.

The first one was born in 2004 Election Results and Discussion, and four others have followed, but it really seemed like time to get it going on DU where it would have more visibility and participation, as we react to the horror of Katrina and the administration's criminal negligence.

29. To be honest, no, I don't.

I have seen America elect someone to its highest office who clearly was the tool of higher powers, who was not a deep thinker. I have seen them approve of one of the most aggressive and unjust wars in history. I have seen the American people approve of dramatic curtailing of their civil liberties. I have seen them shrink from criticizing the ever-pernicious influence of Christianity as fundamentalists seek to mold the government in their image.

In short, I have no faith in the American people at all, short of people getting mad over Bush dragging people out in the street personally and blowing them away. The press is firmly in his grasp. People are afraid of offending him. The thousands of dead in a city I love will die in vain. If the people truly were going to make a stand against the man, they'd have done it by now. Now, all I hope for is that the Democratic Party runs someone in 08 who isn't a complete stiff.

I want to know if you can get up after the night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done for the children.

It doesn't interest me who you are, how you came to be here.

I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.

It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied.

I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away.

I want to know if you can be alone with yourself, and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.
