In his quest to unseat U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer has struck an alliance with a controversial group that conducts civilian patrols to stem illegal immigration along the Arizona-Mexico border.
The Minuteman Project — a volunteer group that patrol the U.S.-Mexico border to detain illegal immigrants — is endorsing Spencer's U.S. Senate candidacy because he supports "secure borders."
A Spencer campaign press release quotes Minuteman Project co-founder Chris Simcox as endorsing Spencer. "In the race for U.S. Senate, John Spencer is the only candidate that stands firmly in support of securing our borders," Simcox said in the release.

Spencer, a Republican and Conservative candidate, has embraced a group viewed alternately viewed as heroes or vigilantes. The group began armed patrols in April along the Arizona-Mexico border amid controversy and plans to patrol New York's northern border for one month starting Oct. 1.

Yes, I can see it now: fearless, dedicated patriots patrolling the barb wire emplacements on Fire Island...
Seriously, while I admire anyone who has the courage of their convictions (nutty as they may be), how he thinks this is going to actually help him get elected in a state as blue as New York is beyond me.
