Tinfoil hat question: How much potassium iodide KI or KIO3 does one
take in a nuclear situation and under what circumstances? Where can you get it?

9-11 is the day after tomorrow. I really, really doubt anything will happen, but if something does happen, it might be nuclear and the target might be San Francisco, which is pretty close. I thought getting some info couldn't hurt. Meh. It's hard to second-guess "terra-ists" and the BFEE.

My mother is more freaked about it than I am...I told her I'd ask the moonbats on my leftist forum. :) (I hope she didn't catch Limbaugh's jab at us. Oh well. I'm sick of refuting RW half-truths and lies.)

2. KI only protects your thyroid gland...
Taken even in fairly small doses, it occupies the Iodine binding sites in the gland, preventing it from trapping the potentially dangerous 131I in a nuclear release. In an A-bomb explosion, tehre is a lot more than 131I criculating in the air (nice stuff, like 137Cs that concentrates in milk), and other really potent stuff.

With a nice healthy thyroid sitting on top.

12. Thanks for the info.
If there was a dirty bomb in SF, I wouldn't be affected, but if an A-bomb hit it, my town would receive fallout for sure. Probably a little pill wouldn't be much help.

6. We moved to Chicago 4 days after 9/11
and every day I had to go downtown and look for a job. They had barriers around the Sears Tower and the Fed buildings. Oh, it was terrifying for this country girl.

Find whatever placebo you can to calm your fears.

:)

you are either fucked or you're fine and no pills will make any bit of difference.

Now an accidental radiation leak on the other hand...

9. Tinfoil hat response
Don't worry - "terrorism" is just a made-up, fear-mongering tactic. You have nothing to fear but a tsunami or big quake. Get a case of bottled water at costco and some cans of Chunky Soup. Then strap your TV and bookshelves to the wall. Good to go.

I mean, if someone really had a nuclear weapon that could destroy a US city, would they WAIT to use it?

10. Your really worried, aren't you?
:hi: Ladyhawk....

I confess, I believe something is coming soon too (and Chertoff's comments at the press conference gave me as many chills as having to look at him). It's as if they are "foreshadowing" just enough to illicit fear and yet purposefully be vague. I shuddered when I heard "Brownie" was being sent back to DC in order to be "prepared" in the event of another disaster (God help us all! :scared:)

But I have long believed that the next Terrorist attack would be on the West Coast w/ San Francisco being the more likelier of targets.

I'm in Marin County...I feel safer over here from any "fallout" and because of the marine coastal wind patterns and cover from Mt. Tam...but none the less, I take no comfort lately in knowing who is running the country and in light of what is happening in New Orleans. New Orleans is the test run. When I read in an earlier thread and heard on Randi Rhodes that the police (w/ military assistance) are going door to door and taking weapons away from homeowners, I literally shuddered and had my head nearly explode (as I'm sure the Freepers are) because I can't think of anything more blatantly in violation of constitutional rights than them suspending the 2nd amendment and people's right to bear arms and forcibly taking them from their homes...in America... :scared:

11. it just depends on how close you are to a nuc plant or the fallout..
i live on a barrier island our first reposnders were given it and they handed out what they had left over to citizens,.2 years ago...

i felt it was too old now..so i ordered some a month ago..from ebay..
you may still be able to get it from ebay..200 pills was approx 18.00

that is enough for 5 ppl

but you never take it unless they tell first responders to take it or it is announced to take it..

i have my husband and children have it in their glove compartment..and i bought enough to give to all my friends and their kids to carry in their cars...

hey i pray it never has to be used..but i carry a mask for cpa in my glove compartment..i am traimed to us and i carry a defibulator in my trunk..i pray i never have to use either..but i was at a ball game last yr , minor league and a guy went down in the stands..and i used my defibulator and he was saved..the minor league park has now bought one in case they ever need it..if i hadn't had mine the guy would have been dead...

do i think the pills will keep anyone alive..i don't know...but if there is a chance to survive a bad situation, i want them and not be begging for them from the government or not have them available to my family!!

go to ebay you may be able to get them there..or go to your local pharmacy and see if they have them...

i also bought some from a medical company a one person dose ..and the were $6.00

i piss $6.00 away on crap ( magazines??)..so its a good investment if it makes me feel better having them!
and knowing my kids have them!
