Should we treat Rush's weakness with compassion?...
As we would have liked the Big Dog to have been treated?

Or should we just act in kind?

Personally, next time someone mentions something Pigboy says, I'm probably going to say, "He probably didn't mean it, being high on drugs and all."

1. I am normally compassionate to a fault....
except where loud mouthed bullys are concerned. I like to treat other the way I would like to be treated, in this case I think the prick should be treated the way he treats others.

69. I am finishing Al Franken's book and it is a very good
argument for having no pity. Limbaugh is really a piece of excrement. He deserves everything he should get (if justice works the same for him than for a poor devil without money and influence).

23. We need to let Rush learn from his short commings.
To rescue him because of having a disease will only enable him to continue... Suffering has a place and this is one of them.

Forgiveness has nothing to do with me. I'm not in the loop.

He's responsible for his abusive behavior. He needs to pay the price!

5. He is the biggest HYPOCRITE in America
and I say hold him to the same rules and standards he has frothed at the mouth about:

"There's nothing good about drug use," he was saying. "We know it. It destroys individuals. It destroys families. Drug use destroys societies. Drug use, some might say, is destroying this country. And we have laws against selling drugs, pushing drugs, using drugs, importing drugs. And the laws are good because we know what happens to people in societies and neighborhoods which become consumed by them. And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up."

8. Feed Him To The Lions!
Hi All,

For years Rush Limbaugh has inflicted his brand of hate and venom.

He has corrupted the minds of untold millions.

He has mocked our democracy and political process.

He has demonized and denigrated whole groups of Americans.

He has profited from the suffering of others.

He has squandered the public trust.

Is this man worthy of our sympathy?

I think not!

Feed him to the lions!

Rush is a truly mentally impaired individual who wants the harshest of justice for everyone else, and the softest of mercy for himself.

but for him and his spawning little radiohims...

I would like better nothing than to see him washed up... scruffy... in an airport... in a bathroom stall.... claiming to have been "attacked" ... by those he always demeaned... only to be quickly proven that he faked the whole thing. I want to see act2 of the final public glimpse of Morton Downey Jr., but with a new star - ala rushbo.

Edited on Sat Oct-04-03 06:21 PM by salin
You know you do....

Perhaps the biggest embarrassment of Downey's career came when he claimed neo-Nazi skinheads attacked him in a San Francisco airport restroom in 1989, cutting off his hair and painting a swastika on his head.

Authorities could never verify the attack, and Downey's critics called it a publicity stunt. A few months later, the show was canceled.

15. In Clauswitz
there is quite a cold blooded bit, called something like 'following up the retreat'.

Basically the thesis is that when you fight a battle and win, then even so the casulties are about the same. You don't make any real gains until you start massacring the retreating enemy and grabing his expensive artillery pieces that he has not got time to pack up and withdraw with.

It's a hum and har one this.

29. And it's not just Limpballs
there is the entire pack of right wing media who we get to make the point of what we would like to do to them.

If it is going to undermine the morale of the right media then rip him to shreds.

If on the other hand the right wing media will think 'well we got nothing to lose we will fight to the last man', so in effect it increases their fighting spirit, then don't rip him to shreds.

And also if letting Rush escape without too much damage allows wavering right wingers to look at us and say "well they are very decent" and defect to our side, then don't rip him to shreds.

19. Neh, Don't Fall for the Wingnut Spin
They use our own ideological underpinings against us. Tweety is one of their tools, spreading the lie that, "Liberals are compassionate in the ABSTRACT, loving 'humanity' but despising the ragged individual in front of them. RAYGUN would GIVE MONEY from his pocket to unfortunates who came up to him." This Reverand WEEMS story is repeated without proof being demanded or given: Start with the MILLIONS of people hurt by RAYGUN's policies. Continue with demanding, WHO specifically, by name, was given money by RAYGUN, and HOW MANY of these individuals?

And wingnut trolls frequently assail us when something bad happens to one of our enemies, scolding us with, "And you Liberals are supposed to be so caring!" On the flip side, our own bleeding hearts stop us in mid-gloat with, "We don't want to act like THEM!"

Nonsense. And it's not just our passing judgement on somebody who has constantly passed judgement on others. As somebody else has posted here, if a Black or Hispanic been caught with 4,000 pills, they would get 30 years in the big house. As it is, he will get to stay in his own big house. Neh, no mercy, or actually just the SAME mercy he extends to others.

31. Damn...Tough Crowd...
I would be a hypocrite, if I did not show compassion for his addiction
to opiates. I've been there, it sucks.

While I never spoke out with hatred and vitriole against the GOP, (even though I do hate their ideology), I never gave them a chance to take advantage of me either. I look at them as my really stupid cousins from some unknown part of the world where inbreeding has at least a 5 generation start.

My point is, even though they are disgusting hypocrites, arrogant to heights previously unknown to civilization; they still are, (at least anthrpologically), human.

So to avoid being a hypocrite myself, I have sympathy for his addiction. But that is all. If I could sit down and talk to him, one on one, I might be able to help him. Since I can't, he gets the sympathy ticket. (I always did have a place in my heart for poor, stupid animals).

BUt only once, does one get a free ticket...if this happens again, perhaps a severe public humiliating trial should follow. Bring Back the Stocks!

as in, teaching children appropriate limits to their behavior by experiencing the consequences, or bringing ego-inflated windbags down about 50 notches. No one can be truly happy who is so hateful. So I say, he needs to get off the airwaves, get therapy, and find a new "profession".

61. Yes..
...but only after we show compassion for, and release from prison, his peers (all those incarcerated for similar weaknesses).

62. I'm a progressive, not a pacifist.
I think he needs to be ground into a fine pulp, metaphorically speaking. His hypocrisy can do some damage to the neoconservative movement he sells. He should be publicly ridiculed at every opportunity.

This guy is one of the biggest propagandists for a political movement that's killed thousands of innocent people, declared war on the lower and middle classes, the environment, and individual rights. He's a part of it. His addiction is unfortunate, but it's really none of my concern.

78. Is he?
Are you SURE???

Last I checked, most humans at least had a shred of compassion in them. Rush has shown himself to have ZERO compassion for anyone who isn't a white, Christian, Repugnican bastard! Screw him. Let him rot in hell!

64. Q: "Should we treat Rush's weakness with compassion?"
A: Fsck, no! He's had no compassion for others during his sorry life; now it's time for him to get some harsh treatment. Treating republinazis like they treat others is the only thing that will get through to them.

67. The law is pretty clear on this
Edited on Sun Oct-05-03 02:25 AM by JellyBean1
I think we should have "compassion" on Rush and the law should be followed exactly in this case. Full manditory sentence is needed. How else can he get the 'rehab' he so despirately needs.

Doesn't Wackenhut operate prisons in Florida? I am sure corporate america would love to have him for a guest. He could even contribute effort by say picking up trash on the highways or chopping sugar cane as prison labor. This will teach him the value of 'honest' labor and industry. Yesirebob, Wackenhut will make him into a fine citizen.

Yes folks we need to give him some of his "tough love". How else can he be expected to fully develope into the type of person that makes a parent proud?

70. it means to enter into another’s suffering & to respond in an act of mercy
it has nothing to do with what ugliness a person has done before.

if we can not see the difference between what a man does and what a man is, then we are no different than those who advocate hate.

i dont like limbaugh, but i feel sorry for him. he is a hate-filled person, but he is a human being and if by his words and deeds he is deemed less than human by this crowd around here, then his infection has taken hold in the hearts of those whom he wishes ill. and i can find no greater ill to befall a person than to live in hate for another.

do not let limbaugh's message of hate infect you. it is what he, and all who preach it want. it is the only way they can truly win.

do not let them.

71. Enable Rush's addiction?
That would be inhumane! He must pay the full consequences in order to hit bottom and begin his recovery! The first step in recovery is admitting you have a problem, he hasn't admitted it yet. We would be hurting Rush, and possibly contributing to his death, by not insisting he own up to his behavior. The compassionate thing to do is make him pay.

(Okay, I don't fully believe all this, but it sounds like pretty good spin to me!)

72. Would you save Hitler's life so that he could do it all over again?
Show Rush compassion and healing and he'll just get up and do it again. It's roughly the same dilemma the world faces in deliberating whether or not to save Bushco's ass in Iraq.

73. "Should"
I had to think about this and come back to it. "Should" is a buzz word to me that always raises a red flag. It implies that I don't have a choice, and that there are guilt and shame consequences associated with it.

So, I'm comfortable in dismissing the notion that I "should" treat pigboys weakness with compassion, because I do have a choice as to whether I do or not.

Instead I have framed the issue as "Do" I feel any compassion for pigboy's weaknesses. I checked - it's not there. I have compassion for addicts in general and appreciate it as a powerful sickness, but I don't feel any compassion for pigboy personally. I don't owe him anything just because it has now become crystal clear WHY he is so sick and psychotic.

And I don't know that he deserves anyone's goodwill just yet, as far as I know he is still using, making excuses and blaming others. I think any change in tone has to come from him first. I do hope he can overcome his addiction, but even then he would be in the same category as a dry drunk to me until he shows me otherwise.

Dry drunks have a way of using the compassion of others and a weapon against them too. I'm not willing to write a blank check to someone who sobers up or set myself up to be used either. And I gotta think this wicked bastard would try it.

Not every drunk and addict that sobers up has an epiphany about life or other major turning point that results in significant changes in their attitude or the way they view the world either. So even if pigboy were to receive treatment and get himself cleaned up, I still expect no more than a sober asshole instead of a high one.

I also think it just that he suffer. Maybe it would humble him; maybe not.

And I do take great delight in his meltdown, mostly because of what he symbolizes to the ditto heads, the rabid right, and the GOP and how it so succinctly reveals the hypocrisy and audacity of it all. I couldn’t have dreamed of a better way to demonstrate it or a better person to sacrifice.
