The president did actually say that "Brownie," his pet name for the FEMA director, was doing "a heck of job" in the aftermath of the storm. Of course he also said that nobody could have anticipated that the levees would break. Although dire warnings from every quarter had predicted exactly that looming danger (see National Geographic, Oct. 2004, for example), Bush axed their repair and maintenance budgets. And he put in charge of the agency that would respond to a major terrorist attack a man with no experience and no credentials except as a frat boy bootlicker. Tell your members of Congress that Brown must go NOW, before the next disaster in the making cripples the rest of our economy.

Please consider that Roberts has only 2 years total experience as a judge. To make him a member of the Supreme Court, let alone its Chief Justice, would be to repeat the mistakes made by having Brown head FEMA and multiply them by involvement with every aspect and issue in American life, policy, and decision then again multiplied by all the years Roberts can be expected to live.

I emailed my opinions on Brown and "should the national guard be brought home from Iraq?". I wasn't able to access the one on Roberts though--I'll try it a little later. My (totally baseless) suspicion: he fires Brown, whatever Brown did for Bush will come back and bite Bush in the butt.

I'm curious how Brown came to Bush's attention in the first place. Was it through Brown's association with the Oklahoma Republican Party? Because I doubt it was through the Arabian Horse Society.

"Brown's ticket to FEMA was Joe Allbaugh, President Bush's 2000 campaign manager and an old friend of Brown's in Oklahoma. When Bush ran for president in 2000, Brown was ending a rocky tenure at the horse association.

Brown told several association officials that if Bush were elected, he'd be in line for a good job. When Allbaugh, who managed Bush's campaign, took over FEMA in 2001, he took Brown with him as general counsel."
