Guns are being confiscated in NO. What is the NRA doing about it?
NRA-ILA Comments On Situation In New Orleans

Friday, September 09, 2005

Numerous media sources are reporting on a campaign by New Orleans city authorities to confiscate lawfully-owned firearms from people in the city. Louisiana statute does grant the government, during a state of emergency, broad powers in regulating and controlling firearms.

However, we have seen not just with Hurricane Katrina, but other similar situations, that when police are unable to control the criminal element, people turn to the one freedom that protects all others--the Second Amendment.

While one can certainly understand the dire predicaments of all those affected by Hurricane Katrina, as we have learned throughout history, campaigns to disarm the lawful do nothing to disarm the criminal. And in truth, these restrictions make citizens less safe. Despite the valiant efforts of many law enforcement officers and rescue workers, too many of those left in the wake of Katrina are ultimately responsible for their own security and safety and that of their families and loved ones. This is especially true when communication is virtually non-existent and police can't be quickly summoned to respond to calls for help. At these times, lawful gun ownership is paramount to personal safety.

Of course, the entire situation in New Orleans is constantly in flux. But rest assured NRA is monitoring this situation very closely and will address any activity by the government that unduly infringes upon the rights of lawful gun owners at the appropriate time. As we learn more, we will report to our members accordingly. In the interim, however, we join with all Americans in offering our thoughts, prayers, and assistance to the victims and survivors of this terrible natural disaster.

http://www.nraila.org/CurrentLegislation/Read.aspx?ID=1731

Basically, the NRA is doing NOTHING. The poor fools who have faithfully sent in their membership dues and voted against "gun-hating" Democrats for decades are being betrayed while the real agenda of the NRA is revealed. That agenda is and always has been simply to support the Republican Party and the wealthy and powerful people who run it by manipulating ignorant and selfish one-issue voters.

If the NRA isn't sticking up for the people here, maybe my dad should think about cancelling his membership.

3. Applauding.
The NRA has never been about the 'rights of all gun owners', it's been about the 'rights of gun owners we like'. They don't like poor black folks having guns... makes them afraid they might shoot BACK.

40. I've always thought that about the NRA too
I am not a fan of guns myself but I think this is an overreaction on the part of the government (I don't know if it is the feds or state doing this). But it seems like mercenaries like Blackwater can carry weapons so it isn't right. Basically I guess if you are rich in New Orleans you can hire mercenaries to protect your stuff but if you are poor (or at least not rich) you have no right to protect yourself and your stuff. Maybe the govt. knows what the people really fear is the government, not so much other people.

4. From Gun Owners of America's website:
GOA Denounces Gun Confiscations In New Orleans

For Immediate Release
September 9, 2005
Contact: Ellie McDaniel
703-321-8585

"Simply outrageous!"

That was the reaction from Erich Pratt, Director of Communications for Gun Owners of America, after learning that the city of New Orleans had begun confiscating legally-owned firearms from New Orleans' residents.

"By what authority can the mayor order these confiscations?" Pratt said. "You can't legitimately suspend the God-given rights of American citizens who have committed no crimes.

"These confiscations will not make the people of New Orleans any safer. Privately owned firearms were the only thing which prevented good people from becoming victims in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when few policemen were to be found anywhere in the city.

No Mayor has the authority to negate the second amendment to the Constitution. Neither does the President, any Senator, any Congressman, any police authority, nor you or I.

34. It seems to be the chief of police for NO that talked about it first
"No civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to carry pistols, shotguns or other firearms, said P. Edwin Compass III, the superintendent of police. "Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons," he said.

But that order apparently does not apply to hundreds of security guards hired by businesses and some wealthy individuals to protect property. The guards, employees of private security companies like Blackwater, openly carry M-16's and other assault rifles. Mr. Compass said that he was aware of the private guards, but that the police had no plans to make them give up their weapons."

48. there is a huge leap from will nto be allowed to carry
firearms, to your firearms will be confiscated... which the Feds are doing.

I am not allowed to carry a weapon either, but god help them if they try to take my guns away from my home.

And THAT ist he point, they are taking fire arms from them... the will not be allwoed to carry fire arms is standard in a city under some civility... or are you allowed to carry openly your guns?

9. No, It Is Not. It Is, However, A Constitutional Right
As much as it seems to be hated here the Constitution gives you, me, and every other American, the right to keep and bear arms. Just like it says:

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

All they want to do is sell guns. They don't care if people have them or not - unless it helps sell more.

Secondly it is a blatant violation of law in general, these people who are being stripped of guns are not criminals, and it includes people who have had their guns registered and possess permits.

we let a few rights slip through for "safety" reasons, then a few more, then a few more... then we have NO people losing their right to bear arms, even though have done nothing illegal (I'm talking only about the non-criminal), and then it becomes easy to say "Well, that went without protest - let's take the guns of everyone in Louisiana, and let's take away some other rights, since no one's complaining"

And eventualy you have the republican wet dream of a subservient toadying populace.

65. so exactly what have you done to help your fellow man?
I am willing to compare notes...

In other words, apart of being on a Message Board what exactly have you done to push for civil rights? And DiFi, she was useless but I guess she is fine with you... bankrupcy bill and CAFTA and all... because she is a D... (did you know hubby works at the Carlyle group and that she gets majorities OUTSIDE her home district?)

68. For one thing...
I'm not hanging around a shooting gallery with right wing loonies...

What I find funniest is that much of the exact same rhetoric about "gun control" is what I used to hear about civil rights...and usually spouted by the same dreary racist humholes (Crazy Bill Buckley, Trent Lott, Jesse Helms)...

"DiFi, she was useless but I guess she is fine with you..."
Let me know the next time she peddles John AshKKKroft's lie about the Second Amendemtn.

and find almost no posts criticizing pResident Turd's gun grabbing...although you can find ones slamming the mayor, local cops and even one slamming sane Democrats who support gun control...

Go figure that (snicker)...

39. Betcha the NRA Are Too Busy and Will Appreciate My E-ltr to Them
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4723536
They DO have the NYT link to the item under "Other News" at their website. They require Address and other identifying info on their "Contact Us" form, but this can be worked-around using zeros and random keys. Here's my typically confrontational message to them:

http://www.nra.org /

"Contact Us": https://www.nrahq.org/contact.asp

For years and years the NRA has told us that the 2nd Amendment was absolutely INVIOLABLE, that possessing firearms would protect us against an oppressive government, despite that individuals facing off against a government armed with WMD is impossible, and despite that the 2nd Amend. refers to militias for national defense.

Yet, as we speak, firearms are being confiscated from citizens in New Orleans and the NRA and its various usually-outspoken members are strangely silent. No words like "cold, dead hands" --to say nothing of attempts at legal remedies like restraining orders. Could it be, after all, that the NRA really HAS been merely interested in the profits of gun manufacturers and Republican politics, NOT the high-minded 2nd Amendment, all along?

53. Good for the NRA! I was afraid they might support the taking of guns away,
I'm glad they are remaining consistent.

Taking guns away is inhuman. While I don't think there's a huge criminal element in the city, who cares? People have the right to defend themselves, and the only people who will willingly offer their guns are the law abiding.

Taking guns in NO is just part of the genocide.

People have a RIGHT to defend themselves.

The Right invented gun control in this country, not the Left. They were the ones who put all the colonial era laws on the books barring slaves and even free blacks from being armed.

Why, it's almost like the whole "gun rights" movement is nothing but the last gasp of the old Jim Crow crowd...because that's what it is.

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/176458_focus06.html

Which is why "gun rights" is being peddled by folks like Tom Delay, John AshKKKroft, Trent Lott, David Duke, Ann Coulter, Pat Buchanan, Ted Nugent, Larry Pratt, etc...and gun shows are awash with swastikas and hate literature.

77. It goes to show how phony "gun rights" really is....
There's no individual right to own a popgun in the Second Amendment.....as the courts have affirmed over and over.

Nor did gun loonies really think there was...they KNEW it was a lie even as they pushed it. That's why there's no big uproar on right wing blogs about this....except for the ones who want to blame this on Blanco or Nagin.

The "RKBA movement" is nothing but old fashioned racism and right wing extremism. They weren't even very good at hiding it.

75. You sound surprised.....why?
"You are a bunch of transparent, racist, GOP shills"
Why the fuck do you think the NRA's Board consists of Ted Nugent, Grover Norquist and bunch of white supremacist loonies? Why do you think gun shows are full of swastikas and hate literature? When you hear folks like Larry Pratt spout gibberish about "self defense" who did you think he was talking about shooting?

It's been thuddingly plain to see that the "gun rights" movement is nothing but racism dressed in a different sheet. If that comes as some sort of surprise to YOU, it's not an NRA member who buried a head in the sand.

"Now, saying 'I'm with you guys on guns.' In any other time or place you'd be looking for a lynching mob." The crowd responded with "let's do it" and "I've got a rope."

"§1783. Registration with department of public safety

Every person possessing any firearm shall register with the department the number or other mark identifying the firearm, together with his name, address, and place of business or employment, the place where the firearm is usually kept, and, if the person is other than a natural person, the name and home address of the executive officer thereof having control of the firearm and the name and home address of the person having actual possession thereof.

You mean you think that what the tragedy in New Orleans needs is lots of shootouts? That IS twisted.

"Next time you might actually try answering the questions instead of defelecting."
Jeeze, the only "question" you asked was the rhetorical one trying to pretend that this wasn't being done by pResident Turd.

Just as the only one "defelecting" here is you...trying to pretend that Sarah Brady and liberals are to blame.

82. Weapons confiscated in Dallas
The father of a friend of mine worked over last weekend checking people in at BigTown (a former mall that has been vacant for years) in Dallas. He said they were running people through metal detectors and were getting a huge assortment of guns, knives, and other weapons.

I wonder if they are keeping track of who owns what and will give it back to them?
