Fox'sTony Snow Says Evacuees Buying Louis Vuitton Bags W/Debit Cards
The Fox slimy conservative news anchor, Tony Snow was cracking jokes with the Fox reporter at the Houston Astrodome. The reporter was telling him how everything is just rosey at the "Dome". People are getting all different kinds of meals, kids have an extensive play area, massages are available etc.. It's some kinda paradise the way he's decribing it.

Then the reporter on the scene mentions the $2,000 debit cards and says they were discontinued. Snow chuckles and says "Yeah, they thought is wasn't such a good idea after all when they noticed people were buying Louis Vuitton luggage with them."

:wtf: Get the picture of what kind of stories will be manufactured for distribution in right wing e-mails?

1. I posted this a couple of days ago about the
government being able to see all the purchases of the cardholder and that their spending habits would be scrutinized and publicized to make them look like ignorant poor people.... This is wrong. It should be a private matter what they buy. I am not saying it was a good choice, but it is not up to us to judge, is it?

21. Tens of thousands of evacuees. How many would buy non-essentials during
a time of desperation and uncertainty? A very small percentage. Just as there was a very small percentage of thugs who shot at rescuers.

On Edit: Please remember and keep repeating - so as to catapult the truth - that each person is getting $300 - up to a max of $2000 for families of 7 or more. One DU'er posted that apartment rents in TX start at about $700 per month.

10. I Hit Upon That, Too
Also, they could control who is authorized to honor the card and who isn't. Say, it could direct people only to buy at a Home Depot or Wal-Mart than at a local business.

Be assured the "welfare queen" stories have just begun here. We'll see the right wing attempt to use race to distort class in this tragedy.

What appears to me when I see the coverage...especially on the little I've seen on Faux...most of the "refugees" you see are black. If they show a missing child, it's always black, yet there are certainly hundreds, if not thousands of poor white children who were lost as well.

And, of course, Mr. Snow wouldn't dare mention if he found out someone took that 2Gs and put it on Haliburton stock. That's what I'd do.

64. The government gets our tax money... (you won't believe this response)
Which means the government has just as much to scrutinize what those folks are doing...

Just as much as we have every right to scrutinize how the government spends it.

And people don't. That's one reason why we let those fools and freaks rack up JUST ABOUT EIGHT TRILLION DOLLARS IN DEBT.

It's clear at this point the US isn't going to survive what's going on. So I won't ask. I'm going to live while I can and try to pay back what I owe. If I don't make it, it's because the system will crash and everybody else won't either; which means people will turn to robbing, extortion, and killing to get money. (in other words, we all become our own private corporation...)

(on edit:
I was oh so very wrong, apparently you can get a lot of the uglier monogram bags for only $500-800!)

Implication:

Those scary black people would rather buy a Louis Vuitton (which carries pretty ugly bags, mostly) than food or anything to help themselves.

This isn't primarily a race issue, but people like these asshats MAKE it one. Fuck them.

the fact that the goverment was going to give survivors the counterfeit designer stuff that customs has prevented from entering the country?

If I had nothing, I would like a handbag or tote and some luggage, perhaps some toys and music players for my kids too. It wouldn't matter to me if it was a fake Ralph Lauren. It's still useful stuff.

And yes, I agree, whatever people decided to do with those cards is their business.

9. A LIE! The bags are fakes--Here's the skinny:
The fed confiscates knockoff merch all over Houston. They distributed millions of dollars of stuff that's been sitting in a warehouse for the last few years--it was all over the news here. Not to mention that the knockoff shops themselves are very close to the dome and everybody in Houston knows that.

30. luggage and the victims. . .
I live in Utah, we have 500 or so victims here. The agency I work for is helping them (welfare and unemployment). They put out a call early last week for donations from the staff. They quickly recalled it and said they had tons of donations and everything they needed except luggage. The only donations they needed after tuesday was any kind of luggage, backpacks, duffel bags etc.

When you think about it, we were relocating these people to apartments and some of them had come here with plastic garbage bags with what little they had in them. They had received a few other things here (the first call was for grooming things, diapers, etc.). How do they carry them?

Maybe all the cheap stuff had been sold by the time these people got to the store.

37. I agree with everything said, here
That Snow is an asshole, and that FOX is using this to prove a sterotype, to drum up freeper prejudice. I also read about the goods being knock-offs, and I don't think the gov't should monitor the purchases.

That said...

A lot of times, we like to give the poor attributes that are just not a reality -- and it sort of cannonizes them. In my opinion, this is disrespectful. The poor are like "everyone" else. They want name-brand goods, and they fall into the trap of buying things outside of their use-value, despite the fact that they're poor. The only exception to this, that I've noted, after several years of working in social services, is that those who are crack smokers and meth addicts, do not have the same problems, because all they care about are the drugs.

I worked with a family who had three kids. Dad was mentally disabled, mother worked part-time at McDonald's. One child had learning disabilities, the other two had behavioral disorders. They had to shave every kid bald, because of lice. They lived in a roach-infested apartment, with scum and dirt and trash, everywhere. The biggest event in these peoples' lives was when they got their EIC checks. By working part-time, the mother was able to secure about $3,000 in EIC money. So, what did they do with the cash? Get a running car, so the kids wouldn't have to ride, in the winter, in a car with the windows busted out? Did they save it, and make a plan and get out of the shithole they were living in? Did they try to make it go as far as possible? Did they buy cleaning supplies to clean up their disgusting apartment?

The answer to all of the above is: NO. What they did do, however, is buy the dad a gold chain, the kids GAP sweatshirts, a great big stereo and television system, and blew the rest on junk. This is after YEARS of intensive home intervention and DCFS involvement.

Look, I'm a very critical person. I don't like myth or bullshit. I was so understanding with the realities of my clients, that I actually budgeted cigarette, beer, and even DRUG MONEY, into their household budget, in the hopes that I could just get them to modify their behavior a bit, so their innocent little kids didn't have to live in squalor, with lead poisoning, or with a head-full of bug eggs -- BECAUSE THESE PEOPLE DID NOT FUCKING CARE. Client after client -- the same goddamn thing: environmental neglect, failure to protect (from child molesters and abusers!!!), lead poisoning, child abuse -- but the ones who weren't addicted to drugs, lit up like Christmas lights when they either got "brand name" items from charity, or scraped enough money together to buy something that was WAY OVERPRICED when they neglected many of their other needs.

Now, I don't necessarily think that it's their fault. I think it's all of society's fault, but I do think that some of the blame lies with them. Many of these clients, though disadvantaged and with some sketchy socialization issues, were not STUPID, and to pretend that they are either stupid or helpless demeans them. Meaning, that I think, to respect the poor, you must see them in full-color: they are as weak and as irresponsible as anyone else. As weak as the employer who loots people's pensions, as weak as the behemoth chain that busts labor unions, as weak as those dumb ass freepers, who are always complaining about government, but are too lazy, afraid and selfish to get off their own asses and provide community support to those who have less than themselves. As weak as the middle class perosn who spends and spends and gets caught up in all that "keeping up with the Jones'" bullshit.

Instead of just ragging on dumb FOX news employees for their obvious racism, recognize that the poor are just as susceptible to the bullshit, and that it's a problem that we all have. And do something about it.

40. I also wanted to add
That there are millions of hard-working Americans, who take care of themselves, and their families, but are still poor -- the people who were referred to me were not referred to me for being poor, specifically, (though I believe that the poor are more often referred, not by virtue of the fact that they abuse their children any more than the wealthy, but because of their class), they were referred for abuse, neglect and failure to protect from abuse. I don't think that most poor people are all about this stuff -- but I do think that most of them, as all of us, have a problem with consumerism, buying things outside of use value, or recognizing a "brand name," as a status symbol. And my point is: we are ALL both the perpetrators and the victims of this phenomenon.

purses, clothes, toy, & stuff? I think the knock-offs were being sent from Washington to Houston.

Feds announced this last weekend.

42. What? Not down payments on Cadillacs?
As soon as the debit cards were announced, I KNEW this typical line of right wing bullshit would be spewed. These people are so predictable in their loathsomeness.

44. Like we couldn't see this kind of sick smarminess coming. Its like
people who use food stamps and others in line talk because maybe they have a nice roast or a bag of gourmet cookies in their cart.

People want to pretend to be all charitable and kind, but only if you stay down and don't enjoy the little luxeries only to be had by them.

These 2 should be shit canned for their disgusting remarks. I remember on Crossfire one evening, the conversation was about social security.Fucker Carlson said something about old people eating cat food or whatever.

Carville cut him a new one, but I think that this I am rich therefore I am better is so inbedded in some of these people they don't even care what they say and until we, the working class people, say fuck you you are not doing this anymore, then it will not stop.

Edited on Sat Sep-10-05 12:44 PM by Cleita
name brand seemingly expensive goods, like the Goodwill and Ross for bargain prices. I have seen Louis Vuitton at Ross for a fraction of the cost because they are either a discontinued line or seconds with some minor flaw in them. I have designer clothes that I buy at Ross for less than I would spend at Walmart for their el cheapo brands.

. . .this sick and blatantly racist. Sure there are some people who are not going to put this money to good use, however the overwhelming majority of people are going to do the right thing. This is just a perfect example of Snow and FAUX pandering to racial stereotypes. Disgusting.

60. If the people in the Superdom had been white they would
have been called hostages being held by armed gunmen.

Instead, people like Snow said the Superdome could not be evacuated because people were shooting at helicopters.

See the bias Tony?

61. Good point. Which gives rise to another question: How can a handful of
thugs prevent the rescue of thousands?

Bush saw what was happenening, he had the power to pick up the phone and remedy the situation with the best equipped armed forces on the planet.

66. If we could take Fallujah-we could secure the Superdome
and free the 25,000 hostages there.

They escaped from Katrina, they survived the flood, and then they were held hostage in the Superdome and Convention center.

That is the message.

Good thread Oasis.

70. and in other disastors
they have handed out checks to middle class people, but NO ONE judged those people and how they spent the money. Hey, maybe some of the people are buying doritos and pop. IT'S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS. People are so worried about how people are spending this stupid 2,000. Did we ask those rich people that got a buyout after 911 how they spent their millions????? No, but we worry about these poor people.

POOR PEOPLE are not dangerous. POOR PEOPLE are not evil. POOR PEOPLE sometimes smoke. POOR PEOPLE sometimes drink. POOR PEOPLE need money for shoes. POOR PEOPLE know what they need to buy to take care of their kids.

OK, let's spend thousands of dollars hiring someone who can monitor how these people are spending their money.

We are only worried about these debit cards because the victims are poor. So why the hell does everyone all of a sudden care about them so much, when 2 weeks ago we couldn't even get a bus to them!

77. US Customs GAVE the hurricane victims/survivors
knock off copies of expensive originals -- so it may look like some of the survivors are buying expensive stuff.

When I heard that Customs was doing this I was wondering how long it would before a sleaze ball, slime bucket, SOB talk show frickin' snot would start saying that the victims were BUYing expensive stuff with the BIG check they got from the Government????

I don't give a shit if they buy a Ferrari. Brownie should personally buy every person a brand new car and a plasma screen TV just for being a grossly inexperienced fuck-up, on top of compensation for everything they lost.
