2000 Texas Republican Party Platform .... Dismantle FEMA
Edited on Sat Sep-10-05 07:47 PM by RedEarth
...get rid of FEMA and replace it with local civil defense coordinators. Sounds like the republican party wants to downsize the federal government to the point that the only function they can provide is pork to defense contractors........

Texas Republicans on FEMA

In response to Juliette's post on FEMA, check out Dan K's comment to my post a while ago "Just Like Haiti." He dug out the following gem from the 2000 Texas Republican Party Platform:
Civil Defense - America had a strong, grassroots-based civilian defense system with county level volunteers and local leadership from the World War I era until the establishment of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Now local civil defense coordinators have been replaced with federally-controlled emergency management coordinators. The priority has changed from "defending" the citizens in an emergency to "managing" the citizens. The Party supports the restoration of our civil defense system. A non-partisan effort should be made to organize communication and emergency response training for citizens to assist in times of emergency, and the local county government should appoint a civilian defense coordinator. Elected county officials should be in charge of decisions affecting the local community.

As Dan K points out, what happened to FEMA was not accidental. It was ideology.

1. FEMA spelt wrong in your title. Oh - this was on the agenda as soon
as they fired Witt. Bush even complemented him on his professionalism & expertise. Then he fires him and replaces him with a kool-aid drinker.

2. There you go...just like Mein Kompf...the plan has been there all
...along. No surprises, just dismay as we stood by refusing to believe it could happen here.

3. Yup. It takes a while to accept that people are very, very different
than other humans. Never read MK. Don't plan to.

4. Except that 9/11 changed everything *gak* in that FEMA got
shoved under Homeland Security, which is the first responder in a national disaster.

So, bad as the repugs want the Governor of LA and Mayor of NO to be at fault, their own misAdministration pushed for the department that changed the bottom-up responsibility structure in a disaster.

:P thhhhpppbbbttt to you, repugs!

6. Face it, they wanted to destroy "all things Clinton"........
everything that Bill Clinton built into a reliable, dependable support system in America was a target for the neo-cons. They so detested Clinton and his policies that benefited EVERY American that they wanted to destroy it all. Well, they did. And it's coming back to bite them in the ass. Karma's a bitch. It's just so sad that so many innocents died in the process.
Will the neo-cons have learned anything? Hell no, they'll continue to tear down everything that helps others and gives them a chance at a decent life. It's all about them, see?

7. The Texas 2000 GOP Platform was weird
Asked to amend the Constitution to state that US is a "Christian Nation" - require Bible reading in school and Ten Commandments in court rooms.

Creation science in public schools.

8. Perhaps...but I personally believe that
Bush gutted FEMA and is replacing it with FAITH BASED CHARITIES such as churches. Remember just after the hurricane when * said that the government will do its part but the American people have to pick up the rest?? I believe this is what he meant.

IN reality it seems the Federal government did very little and everyone else kicked in. Which makes me wonder where all the billions of dollars went...
