Original message
earlier this afternoon i saw on television some CHRISTIANS relief people
who had gone to MISSISSIPPI (I think it was) to LIVE OUT their LOVE THY NEIGHBOR thing.

God forgive me ..... as i heard them talk, it felt that they were passing out a lot more than just food and water ... I can't quote what they said... i just in my gut felt they were passing out christ right wing adoration of bush and hate for the rest of humanity.

flame me if you want to. i don't care.

1. I won't flame.
Those people should pass out food and water and keep their traps shut.

7. oh, how much so do i agree with you! if they would just keep their mouths
shut... the food and water they give to those who need food and water would be a real healing balm.

8. did not write it down...but it was something in the order of
'this is what Christ asks us to do' ... the problem is ... the mention of the name CHRIST has become so polluted and contaminated by these right wing republicans that my heart, my soul and my ears simply shut down in a total meltdown. i refuse to listen to them...whether it is their inserted presence inthe terry schiavo death and dying process, in their inserted presence in every woman's right to choose, in their inserted presence in wanting to place the ten commandments in a government run court ... or passing out food and water along with theirs, not christ's message to the katrina victims ... i can't stand to listen to them.

go ahead and flame me. i don't care.

3. Until you go and help yourself
I don't think you should be so quick to judge them for their actions.

Do you really think people who need water and food care what the political leaning of the people who are helping save their lives???

9. it is the opportunity to emotionally and psychologically abuse others,
those who are in need of food and water, that deeply disturbs me. and that is what they are doing... just like bush using 9/11 for his political advantage, so too are these right wingers using katrina to use and abuse the emotional and psychological states of people who are in much need as a result of the trauma they have experienced. when you help someone you really help them by giving them an opportunity to find how they want to help themselves, not by telling them what to do, such as embrace bush and christ, or else ...

anyhow, i don't think i will change your point of view ... and i still have mine but i thank you for this opportunity to exchange points of view.

13. OK
Heres some water and food and yes "Jesus Loves You" is "abuse(ing) the emotional and psychological states of people"

Please, give me a break.

"...such as embrace bush and christ, or else ..."

What is the "or else"? Take away their food and water???

If you think that, you must not know any people who are motivated by Christian love because people who are willing to go to disaster areas do it out of love for their fellow man not to push an political agenda or because they love george bush.

Sheesh

14. perhaps you are motivated out of love to go to the disaster area.
and perhaps you are not interested in pushing a bush/christian agenda.
the people i saw on the television yesterday, were and in fact, it is the christian right wing agenda which has been ruling our country since george w. bush stole the presidency in the year 2000.

it is the george w. bush christian right wing agenda, which has looted our national treasury which did not send the money to NO for the leeves to be shored up; it is the george w. bush christian right wing agenda which calls for zero abortions but wants nothing to do with contraceptives for people who are and will continue to have sex; it is the george w. bush christian right wing agenda which wants nothing with showing dead bodies on the television (american soldiers or NO victims of Katrina)...it is the christian right wing agenda which is so wrong, so most of the time... and even going back to the burning of the INDIAN CHIEF HATUEY in the island of CUBA when the SPANISH, FATHER DE LAS CASAS brought a crucifix to him so that he would embrace christianity, HATUEY asked, "will there be Spaniars in Heaven too?" and the Father replied, "Yes, there will be"...and Hatuey replied, "then I don't want to be in heaven" ..... and so, sort of what i am saying is something like that -- i am sorry if this insults your intelligence but you have my permission to continue to disagree, flame me or pray for me... whatever.

5. Some people from my church in California went
At my church, we see the Bible's message as being "love thy neighbor." We have clothing giveaways, a community meal, and other services for the disadvantaged, because that's what the Bible teaches: compassion.

We're also a bunch of progressives.

6. understand your reaction...I know people who IMO help others
mainly to witness, ie 'save' them

sometimes feel they don't really care about the people themselves, only about 'winning them to Christ'

also agree with poster who said people needing help don't care about the reasons people are giving it

11. thank you ...
for seeing both sides of the issue. i do still, however, agree with the poster who said, "people passing out food and water should just keep their traps shut." ... That in my opinion, would be the real act of charity.

12. When you've lost everything
your home, loved ones, children, a child, you don't care what people say. You need help and it doesn't matter where it comes from.

I just saw the mayors of Slidell, Biloxi and Pascagoula tell Larry King "who" was there first to help.

It was churches and local groups who came to help.
All said the govenment and Fema were slow to respond, although they are there now.
One said they started to see Fema 3-4 days after the disaster. That would be a long time to stand on your beliefs and wait for a secular group to bring water, food & shelter.

Local people were helping people survive.

16. People in true need, will listen to whatever they must
but in the end it's about getting the things they need..food..water..clothing....I doubt that the people who inhabit the missions & shelters truly "believe"..they go there daily for the food and shelter..

It's a bit insulting that they have to sit through the sermon to get the food, but it's just the "price" they pay to eat..

The ones who are delusional are the hyper-religious who think they are saving souls.. They are really just feeding the poor..that's all..

That in itself should be enough, but to some, the "message" is everything..

If I was hungry enough, I would listen to the sermon too:)

17. A 'faith-based' charity supporter was on one of the 'news' channels...
... criticizing the Red Cross for not providing 'faith-based' charities w/assistance.

Excuse the hell out of me, but the Red Cross isn't a 'faith-based' charity, and is not obligated to 'faith-based' charities... it's a humanitarian aid organization.

All these bush supporting RW blowhards love to profess that we don't need godless government aid; they, the 'faith-based' charities, can do it all. My response to them: Goddammit, DO IT!

For once in your miserable lives, follow Christ's teachings (remember Christ, the one that you profess to follow?)...

"And the King shall answer and say unto them, `Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these My brethren, ye have done it unto Me.' " - Matthew 25:40

A new commandment I give unto you: that ye love one another, as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. - John 13:34
