Kids displaced by Katrina welcomed

TORONTO -- Families displaced by hurricane Katrina who have come to Ontario won't have to pay to send their kids to the province's publicly-funded schools.
Education Minister Gerard Kennedy says schools will open their doors to such children so they can start classes immediately.
Last May, the government passed legislation to allow kids of certain classes of temporary residents to go to school without paying fees.
Those fees can range from $7,000 to $10,000 a year.

Kennedy says a number of families that have sought refuge in Canada following the hurricane have inquired about enrolling their children in school.

"By welcoming these students and ensuring that they can attend school at no cost, Ontario's publicly funded schools are doing their small part to help children whose lives have been completely disrupted just as the school year was beginning," Kennedy said.
