Population affected:

• Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) estimates nearly 293,000 homes damaged or destroyed.

• More than 1 million people left their homes, and 163,000 residents of Louisiana are in shelters, FEMA estimates.

• Baton Rouge became Louisiana's largest city nearly overnight as more than 100,000 rescue workers and evacuees joined pre-storm population of 412,000. Mayor's office said population could reach 1 million.

Already, GOP house members are voting against one cent to be paid to these Americans.

I guess if they were Iraqis, the vote would be 100% to aid them and rebuild their infrastructure.

3. Is that why FEMA stopped the debit cards?
I hope to see a class action law suit for all the Americans left to die in New Orleans.

4. I've still not seen a well sourced mortality estimate
Surely the big pols are kicking around tenative numbers for how many died. Nagin said 100k when he admitted he'd gotten no facts to back that up. Then FEMA flies in 25,000 body bags, but everyone says that's way too high. Some articles are saying 10,000 is too high and, like 9/11, we're going to see the estimates drop. But I've not seen any actual estimates.

How many are expected to have died at this point? I think that's a pretty important thing to publicize, even if it later turns out to be too high a guess.
