Katrina Darkens the Outlook for Incumbents
Let's go Dems, ideas, surely there is someone who can come up with a plan: - Public Dismay Could Shape 2006 Elections

By Jim VandeHei
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, September 11, 2005; Page A02

Hurricane Katrina has the potential to foment change in Washington like the terrorist strikes did four years ago, altering the government's priorities for the foreseeable future and darkening the mood of an electorate that was already anxious before the storm hit shore, according to lawmakers, pollsters and strategists from both parties.

The dispute over Washington's role in saving lives in New Orleans and in the future threatens to make incumbents from both parties among Katrina's casualties, several officials said. With the popularity of Congress and President Bush sagging before the crisis, many officials said Bush and lawmakers made their situation worse by pointing fingers and digressing into political warfare with rescue operations still underway.

1. Stop supporting democrats blowing republicans maybe?
Never ever ever promote policies based on group alegience alone. What's that? A numbing sensation followed by a desire to stop reading?
I distinctly remember people being able to think when I was younger. Though sometimes it seems like it was a dream.

2. The Security Horse Is Out Of The Barn
If every Democrat could find a local disaster...a dam, earthquake zone, tornado belt...every area of this country has them...and then ask the question "Do you feel safe??". Then add in the price of gas and the overall state of the economy. The "are you better off today than 2 years ago" could work quite nicely.

The game isn't fighting mr. boooosh, it's tarring the Repugnicans with the EVERY problem people are complaining about. People don't want blaming, they want answers and alternatives. Deomcrats have to show we have if not the answers at least we're open to thinking outside the box.

The big obstacle is people will give their congresscritter a pass even if they hate meeester booosh. I suspect if this regime's approval numbers remain low (or go lower) and become a liability, we'll see Repugnican's claim their "independence" and try to bullshit voters that they really did question this regime, when we know they didn't. This is where Democrats have to call the Repugnicans on their bullshit.

As always, we can't trust or rely on the media to help us. This has to be grassroots in 435 congressional districts and supported by the party with money and resources.

While people want to play litmus as to who is a Democrat or a DINO or DLC or whatever, right now the priority is to remove known Repugnicans from positions of power and put the brakes on the abuses going on in Washington. We can sort out the nuances later.
