"Inside Politics - A challenger for DeWine? - by Stephen Koff
The annointing of Paul Hackett has begun. As other Democrats declare they won't run for the U.S. Senate, they're sending signals-and outright pleas-to the Cincinnatti lawyer,Marine reservist and Iraq war veteran to please challenge Republican incumbent Sen. Mike DeWine next year.
The last of the congressional Democrats to consider a DeWine challenge,Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, announced on Thursday that he will run instead for re-election in Ohio's 17th Congressional District.
Ryan trumpeted the call for Hackett, who recently lost a close House race in a solidly Republican southern Ohio district, saying he had the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee's blessing:"I have encouraged Mr. Hackett to run for the Senate seat and hope that I will have the opportunity to actively support his candidacy."

By Warner2008
From: 2006 Elections Table
Paul Hackett barely lost to Jean Schmidt in the Ohio Second District special election for House of Representatives in one of the most solidly Republican districts in the U.S. Republican Rob Portman who was appointed as Trade Representative previously pulled the district with over 70% of the vote. Democrats had a struggle to get 25-30% of the vote. And held that seat since 1964. Then Iraq Veteran Democrat Paul Hackett entered the race, and garnered 48% of the vote. The Ohio and National Democratic Parties thought a strong showing…no a miracle would be for Hackett to get 40% of the vote. So when he got 48% he definitely turned their heads, as they should have. He combined a strong rhetoric, good looks, charm, and most importantly was able to connect with the voters. Plus, the liberal blogs from all 50 states helped fund this moderates campaign. His strong showing left many to believe that if he could garner that many voters in that very conservative district he could pull a statewide office with ease.

Now in 2006 Republican Senator Mike DeWine, a member of the "Gang 14" is up for reelection. He has poor approval rating numbers, ranking third to last of all U.S. senators. His own party is trying to challenge his spot in primaries. The Democrats are looking for a man to beat Mike DeWine. The Ohio Dems were trying to recruit a Pro-Life Democrat House Rep, which would put his own house seat up for grabs. He recently declined to run. The Ohio voters are fed up with the Ohio Republicans in charge, and want a moderate democrat who supports the troops. Ohio has been hit the hard from all the troop losses. Paul Hackett meets these credentials with his Iraq Marine Tour, and his moderate ideology. The Ohio Dems, and National Dems need to support him because he is the only candidate with the ability to raise the funding to beat a Republican in Ohio. His strong message discipline will be able to take Republican attacks. And his national press coverage like in The New York Times will rally support from all over the country that want a man that served in both Iraq wars in Congress. He won 48% in that very Republican district, which would translate in stronger showing in all the other Republicans districts. He would pull all of Kerry's counties, most notably Cleveland, Dayton, and Columbus. With those credentials and numbers we must support him to take that must needed Senate Seat. Support Paul Hackett for 2006 Senate Race against Mike DeWine by urging Ohio Dems and national to support him, and when they do, please support his cause. We will Take Back America step-by-step, race-by-race!
