1. Says his biggest mistake was assuming cavalry would come in 2-3 days

2. Said he didn't have the drivers for those buses, barely had enough
for the buses used to get people to the Superdome

3. I think its clear from this interview the Mayor did what he could to
get people to safety then relied on the state and federal governments to provide back-up following the storm. I think he did his job admirably.

4. See if they bring up 2 things:
1) that Amtrak offered a ride out of town to evacuees and Nagin said no

2) that FEMA had trailers full of food and water at the Dome before the storm

I want him stay say that these are lies, spin in hindsight.

5. Russert asked about Amtrak. Nagin said he was never contacted
by Amtrak offering to help get people out.

About the food at the SD, Nagin said there was food and he also instructed people to bring 2-3 days worth of food and water for themselves, assuming back up would arrive in 2-3 days.

9. We posted on DU the night of the storm that MRE's were delivered
We figured it was about enough for 10,000 people for two days.

So obviously FEMA was able to bring something in. But like every other part of their meager response it was as little as possible.

10. I distinctly remember him saying just that: Bring enough food and
water for at least 2 days, when I was watching the local news via streaming, he was very clear on that. When asked how long people could be expected to have to stay at the Dome, he said "until Tuesday".

7. If the actual body count is lower than the initial projections will
Nagin be praised for the fine job he did with the evacuation?

Just asking.

11. Especially since the FEDS didn't do anything to help
Edited on Sun Sep-11-05 09:28 AM by DoYouEverWonder
Nagin and Blanco did this on their own. The Feds tried to hinder them, they did nothing to help and the 'locals' still saved most of the people.

13. Right or Wrong?
Nagin blamed Blanco.

I can't believe he would do that, but as I watched, he was very tough on her and not so tough on the president.
