Speaking of dog tags, the military ones

that I spend the better part of nine years wearing draped about my skinny neck by a cheap beaded metal chain.

When I drape them about my neck each morning I consider their meaning to me.

Name and rank and serial number is all I give to the enemy should I be captured.

The 'P' on there is for my religion. But I have no religion. The 'P'is put there because everybody must have a religion-It is so ordered.

Rumor has it that the notch on the tag is to catch on my teeth to prop open my dead mouth.

The other of the two tags is to be tied to one of my dead big toes, assuming of course there would be a big toe to tie to.

I do not like to think of those things every morning as I place the tags and the chained yoke of duty to country about my neck.

But I do think about the meaning of the tags. And I know it is real.

And so I think a great big 'Fuck You' to those of you wearing the fake and pretend dog tags today.
