lets you drown

I know some who do....they've been con--vinced by their black churches that only the republicans are 'christian' and moral....primarily b/c of abortion

4. where in the Bible does it say
that one should walk away from the destitute while financially rewarding the miser?

where in the Bible does it say that contempt for victims is the appropriate response to tragedy (in order to justify not giving $)?

where in the Bible does it say that one should only administer to those in need - if they believe the "right" way?

where in the Bible does it say that 'thou shall not judge' only applies to folks like Rush Limbaugh?

where in the Bible does it say anything that justifies the policies of the current republican party?

Abortion? Rates are higher under Bushco and the republican congress than under a Democratic president.

Gay Rights? More people are favorable to civil unions today, under a republican president and congress, than they were under a Democratic president.

Taxes? For most middle and lower income taxpayers, we pay more today, under a republican president and congress - due to higher state, local, property, gas taxes that were needed to make up for the money from the fed govt that now goes back to the most wealthy ala tax cuts and tax breaks.

This is my response to those still clinging to the message you suggest. Doesn't change minds - but it does often get minds to think for a minute.

5. Well, they do so...
at their peril...

Do you want a job, or do you want to prevent a woman from doing what she wants with her body...that's what it will come down to.

6. Several things going on here
1. Faith based initiatives- Many of the Black churches are getting money from the government, as part of faith based inititiaves. I think we've got a quid pro quo going on here. (We give you money; you support us).

2. The Republicans have infiltrated the Black Churches, somehow convincing people that what should matter most to them, is that women can't have an abortion. Don't worry about losing your job, or not having health insurance. Just make sure women can't have abortions.

Trust me, I'm a Christian African-American, and a proud progressive. But I've got several people in my family who are single-issue voters, and they vote Republican. And they support Bush b/c of his views on abortion.

7. odd thing about "bush's views on abortion"
is that the abortion rate has climbed since he has been president.

And it declined under Clinton.

IMO there is a simple explanation: Economics. When more folks have less economic security (per the issues to which you refer) - they are made more nervous about parenthood (can we feed a (another) child?).

Ironic, no?

9. I don't know one black church whose people support Bush.
Course, that's here in the Northeast.

No worries. Overwhelmingly, black people hate Bush's ass. Some relatives live down in the Carolinas, and they hate Bush more than they disagree with abortion or homosexuality.

This is similar to gay Republicans, in my head--WTF is up with THAT!!
