DISTRACTION TIME: LA threatened
that's the top story on the wingnut sites, like drudge and lucianne. it's not going to work this time-if anything, it will scare people even more when they realize who would be in charge of the aftermath of such an attack

the panic button is broken, folks

1. That's sounds so shady
why on earth would anyone voice their plans to attack a city out loud? I hope its not true but it sounds really shady. Either this is crap or these are some idiotic terrorists.

3. Isn't it possible...
..that warnings of more terrorism, allegedly from al Qaeda, would remind newly-aware Americans on this fourth anniversary of 9/11, that George Bush has done very little to shut down bin Laden's brand of terror, and, instead, has done much to make it worse?

The message could have been concocted by a couple of PR-savvy al Qaeda sympathizers for all we know.

I don't think Rove et al would think of brewing up something like this right now.

5. Pretty clever..."let's see - Louisiana - LA..LA...hey, Los Angeles!
Let's do a terralert for Los Angeles - that way we can really confuse people - shift the meaning of LA, or even better, just make it all one big mess.....that's the ticket"! The ideas are getting stale...

22. Yes, can we please set a protocol? LA = Louisiana. L.A. = Los Angeles.
Okay?

6. Although I firmly believe this admin is capable of
manipulating the timing, I'm not so sure it isn't authentic. Bin Laden did warn three weeks in advance of 9/11 (London reported this, see Salon.com for their 9/11 blog). We had many warnings in advance and that is one of our arguments that Bush did nothing about it. Not so sure we can argue both sides. One: It's ridiculous and no one would warn in advance, and Two: Bush was pre-warned and did nothing about it.

I never know anymore which way to think with this Administration. Guess somehow that's what they want, too. Confusion works on their side. We never get a straight answer or more than one report that collaborates with a second report: ex; few dead in LA, 10,000 feared dead, then fewer than expected dead in LA, then an order of 50,000 more body bags .... ugh... never a straight story, always keeps us guessing...

9. My perspective FROM Los Angeles:
Edited on Sun Sep-11-05 05:27 PM by kestrel91316
I am getting tired of the alleged threats. I don't worry about my own neighborhood, the San Fernando Valley, because I can't for the life of me imagine why a terrorist would bother with attacking this place: sprawling post-WWII suburbia, LOTS of illegal immigrants from Latin America, too many ugly corner mini-malls......... So maybe they will attack over the hill in Beverly Hills, or West LA, or West Hollywood, or downtown. I think the biggest problem might be an attack in Long Beach at the Port of LA. WAAAYYYYY far from here.

So I think I am safe in my home.

Economic impact - that's another thing, but we have a very broad-based economy. Import/export, military/defense industry, entertainment industry, finance, tourism/recreation...........They can hurt us, but they can't destroy us.

I DO live in an area known as Little Israel, which could be a target of ME terrorists, but I doubt it's a big enough, compact enough target to bother with.

12. Your Problem Are Those Mountains To The North...
Aren't there still a bunch of dams and reseviors in the Santa Clarita area? Imagine one floating into the valley. IIRC, there was a very nasty one in the Valley in the late 60s.

Of course there's that "big one"...but then I can't see how one can avoid anything but a disaster scenario if a major tremour shook the LA basin like Northridge or the '71 East LA quake.

I'm sitting near one of the world's businest airport. I grew up knowing O'Hare International was in the sites of Soviet missile batteries and if Ivan chose to push the button, I'd have about 15 minutes to find a nice seat outdoors, grab a cool one and kiss my ass goodbye.

I heard an excellent analysis of how terrorist cells operate not long ago...and there is no pattern to the targets chosen. In fact there's little proof of any co-ordination other than some funding between various groups. The upshot is our intelligence community has been so compromised that we really have no concept of what "terror" is or who these people are and are as vulnerable to a small cell of operatives...right, left, Arab or whomever than ever before.

Honestly, I fear the natural disasters and the fact you're in a blue state that is turning bluer. Washington only would care if there's a major disaster in Orange County or San Diego.

Cheers...

20. There are no large reservoirs in the Santa Clarita Valley. Lake
Piru (?) is up north, but it would drain into the Ventura area, not us. Our big threat is earthquakes, but having been through Northridge and recognizing that the faults as they are can't do any more to us here than they already have, I can take anything they can dish out. Newport-Inglewood fault is another matter, but that would impact the West LA/downtown area most, and us to a lesser degree.

Even if terrorists managed to nuke downtown Van Nuys (can't imagine what would possess them to do so) I would survive due to distance.

10. Um, they're crediting the tape to an AMERICAN KID
ABC News said it had received the video in Pakistan. It reported the masked speaker appears to be Adam Gadahn, from southern California, who threatens attacks on the two cities, "Allah willing," and warns that the attackers will show no compassion.

Wow. That "Al Qaeda" is such an interesting organization, isn't it?
