An article in the KC paper today reveals the following:

Monday, August 29:
The hurricane had not hit land yet, but the supercharged winds that swept over the city made that point moot.

At the on-site headquarters of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers — a bunker near Tulane University in central New Orleans — the 5 a.m. phone call warned of a broken levee, not along Lake Pontchartrain to the north, but in one of the big canals that normally drains city water into the lake.

With the eye of the storm still about an hour away, there was no way to get to the levee, which serves as a boundary between the Orleans and East Jefferson parishes.

It didn’t really matter. The corps had no stockpile of materials for plugging a levee leak or any way to get heavy equipment quickly to the site.

Within an hour, St. Bernard Parish to the east had suffered a catastrophic and sudden surge. Waves poured over levees from Lake Pontchartrain to the north and Lake Borgne to the east.

As a final, fatal insult, a barge had ripped loose from its mooring, breaking the levee wall on the Industrial Canal to the west. It chose a point near the key Florida Avenue pumping station, knocking it out.

Okay if a levee broke at 5 a.m., that was how long before the storm hit? And what caused it to break?

11. There were reports Monday 29th. Nationally not much mention from

sources like AP as I recall. Just vague mentions of damage in initial reports of damages.

But there was more info in the local newspaper's web reporting on Monday 29th. They updated the site throughout the day. Oldest reports at bottom of page.

What I recall at the time and what the Nola.com news blog makes clear was that there was flooding immediately during/after the storm. And reports of topping and breeching.

The Bush Administration is trying to separate the hurricane from the flooding and claims the flooding/levee topping and breeching could not have been predicted and that's why they were caught off guard. But of course it was predicted in all the hurricane hits NOLA scenarios through the years. And indeed flooding was happening during the storm and got worse as water continued to flow in after the storm passed.

5. The storm hit around 6:00 am according to this report...

However it does not say if the eye hit, or if the edge of he storm hit the coast at 6:00 am. (I assume the eye.)

The storm surge associated with the hurricane is what caused the flood walls to break. The waves would be pounding ashore before the hurricane hit shore.

I have seen the conspiracy theories posted here before. And rather than theories I prefer to call them Bull !#@.

The planes flew into the towers. Bush or the government did not plant a bomb in the towers timed to bring the towers down after the planes hit.

And Bush or the government did not plant bombs on the flood walls in New Orleans timed to go off shortly before or after Katrina hit New Orleans.

I would assume that people here at DU are more intelligent than that. What nonsense! No wounder the repugs think we are crazy.

without sharing any of the profits with LA. 9. Water was toppling over the levee by Sunday evening
