After the Flood
Surprising stories from survivors in New Orleans. Broadcast the weekend of September 9-11 in most places, or available via RealAudio next week.
One of the teenagers interviewed in "After the Flood," Ashley Nelson, is the author of an amazing book called The Combination, about her neighborhood in New Orleans. All the copies that were available are now underwater. But The Neighborhood Stories Project, which collaborated with Ashley and several other New Orleans teenagers on books about their neighborhoods, plans to print another run as soon as possible.
The show is presented in "Acts"
Act 1: Is an interview with a African-American Nurse, who was kicked out of the room she hoped to weather the Hurricane in with her Kids, in favor of two "white" Nurses. She ended up at the New Orleans Convention Center, she describes what was actually going on and how she saw the "Thugs" turn to protecting the Old People and the Mothers with children and how they went out and "Looted" the near by Drug Store, only to bring the stuff back to distribute among the Old and Young at the New Orleans Convention Center
Act 2: Is told by one of the Tourists who was there for a "Paramedics Convention." She also tells about how they wouldn't let them cross the Bridge to cross over to the Un-flooded side of Gretna. The Gretna Police were pointing their guns and shooting in the air to keep the people of New Orleans from crossing over to the "West Bank."
