How to Deal with These Racists?
These are my next door neighbors. I must stay in good graces with them as they will have to sign off on anything I want done on my house (per the HOA - adjacent neighbors must agree.) So I find I must stay "nicey nice" with them.

* She is nice, but clearly Republican. She has 3 children. She's a sweet woman, and I don't know where her Republican ideals come from. Maybe her husband? She does not ask the same racist questions or make the same racist statements as her husband.

* Her husband is a Canadian citizen. Yet he is racist. Racist beyond belief. I don't get it. In a 60 minute conversation, the "color" of any given group or person discussed will inevitably be brought up because he brings it up!

* Their nanny is from Costa Rica. The husband openly mocks her about her people. Not always in a mean fashion, but she must wonder when he continually brings up that some subset of people are 'black' or asks if they are in conversation.

How to deal with this family. I like the wife. I think she has a good soul. Her husband, I think, does not. Their housekeeper is caught in the middle. I've met her father and he seems like a sweet man.

What to do? Just avoid trying to make friends?

5. Lots of smiles and waves
and no sit down dinners. I have a colleague like that and I just small talk with him. I know instinctively he WANTS me to argue with him about politics and I just won't go there. Wouldn't change him and it would make me double my blood pressure medication that day.

8. And when they mention race
very obviously change the subject.

I'd give them nothing but the minimum polite and superficial conversation. Definitely do not invite them over.

6. What I would do
Edited on Sun Sep-11-05 06:18 PM by Graf Orlok
is stop "hanging around" them from now on. If/when you do run into them, especially the husband, then just give them/him a courteous salutation and move along. Don't give up on the wife, however. It seems that she could be "saved" if she were to talk to the right person.

That's just my $0.02.

9. he sounds downright obsessed...
If this man obsessively hates persons of African ancestry, why did he move to the native country of about 35 million blacks? If he's going to live here, in this country which is not his by birthright, shouldn't he be making an effort to get along?
