My selfish reason for opposing this idiotic war

Meet my boys.



I haven't poured my heart into being a mother to these two beautiful people for 27 years to allow either one of them to be sacrificed. I don't give a rat's ass how many people Sadaam killed or how many WMDs he may have had or that he wanted to kill the president's dad. I don't care that the Iraqis now have a constitution (if you can call it that). And I really don't care how much 'better off' they are now since we invaded their country. Since I don't blame the insurgents for attacking their invaders, their aggression doesn't convince me that we need to keep our soldiers in Iraq to fight back. And don't even start on the oil argument. The price of gas blows that justification right out of the water.

On this one issue, I agree with every evil repukelican in DC. No way am I letting either one of my kids go to Iraq. No. Fucking. Way.

1. I have two similar reasons for getting involved. My sons are

19 and 26. I started working against Bush in 2000 when I first saw this war coming. My oldest son is expecting his first child. My youngest, who had "all the right stuff" (scholar, athlete, fearless), was assaulted and robbed three days before Election Day 2004. He won't be going since he is still in a wheelchair. We already have plans to keep our oldest son out of any war led by George Bush. Everyone of those 1,896 we have wasted were beautiful and dear to someone.

2. When I think of the 1896

and their mothers, I feel selfish. I went to Crawford and I had the privilege of shaking Cindy Sheehan's hand. I said little to her. All I could do was cry. My heart aches for her and for every other mother who has needlessly lost her child to George's war.

My youngest wants to move to Canada. I wish I could think of a good reason to convince him not to go.

3. My boys are still little, but as Cindy Sheehan said, if Rummy is right

about us staying in Iraq for 12 years, they'll be fair game. :(

After living through Vietnam - which spanned my childhood - I would not be surprised if this war lasted as long.

5. Another step towards a draft is occurring.

Activation of the IRR (ready reserves).

I just received my letter in the mail yesterday. I report to Fort Jackson in a month, unless I can get an extension.

People who think there cannot be a draft are uninformed. The military is scraping the bottom of the barrel by calling up old farts like me. They have no one left after the IRR.

The Army alone missed its recruiting quota by around 10,000 recruits. The military cannot maintain current operations unless they start getting some more people.

I have a couple, too. My daughter joined the A/F in 1998 and married a fellow airman two years later and they have a 4-year-old boy (well, he'll be 4 on Wednesday). Our son-in-law has been deployed to different places, not Iraq, and just came home a few days ago. Our daughter is scheduled to go to Iraq, but we don't know when. I was against this war from the very beginning, but it's really getting personal now. Believe me, I understand your reasons!
