Reps. Kucinich and Tubbs Jones Call On President
To Hire Local Residents And Pay A Living Wage In Rebuilding Gulf Region

88 Members of Congress, Including Representatives From Louisiana and Mississippi, Send A
Letter To The President
WASHINGTON - September 9 - Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH) and Congresswoman
Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH) today sent a letter to President George W. Bush calling on him to sign
an Executive Order to require contractors receiving federal Hurricane relief funds to hire locally to the
greatest extent feasible and pay them a living wage. Kucinich and Tubbs Jones were joined by 88
Members of Congress, including Congressman William Jefferson (D-LA) and Congressman Bennie
Thompson (D-MS).

"It is not enough to just throw federal dollars at the region," stated Kucinich. "We must also provide the
opportunity for the people of the region to rebuild their lives and provide for themselves and their
families."

"It is important that the local residents affected by the hurricane benefit from these huge government
contracts," stated Tubbs Jones. "We owe the people, who have lost everything, nothing less."

In their letter the Representatives state:

Dear Mr. President, <snip>

4. Yes, Edwards has also called for the same thing. GO DENNIS!
Edited on Sun Sep-11-05 10:02 PM by ultraist
Kuchinich: "During the Great Depression, the federal government put millions of unemployed people to work rebuilding the country's infrastructure with federal dollars. The hurricane-demolished region needs a similar emphasis today"

Edwards: "We ought to give them the chance to help through a New America Initiative, modeled after the Works Progress administration, to rebuild a devastated region and offer good-paying jobs and hope to the displaced. Join me and say no to President Bush's failed leadership in a growing call to take this tragedy and turn it into an opportunity. It is not enough to talk about it; we will have to show this Administration that the real leadership means visionary action. You, one by one, can increase the power of the call to action by signing my New America petition here: http://www.oneamericacommittee.com/

I can't find Jesse Jackson's suggestion. Did he say this during an interview?

2. You have any idea how hard * is going to laugh when he reads that?
Edited on Sun Sep-11-05 09:59 PM by BrklynLiberal
Him and Cheney and Rumsfeld are gonna wet their pants laughing. Like they would allow the Gulf Coast to be rebuilt without putting billions into the pockets of their cronies. hahahahahhahahahaha

THAT is exactly why Congress would not allow any debate or stipulations on the bill that budgeted the billions for Hurricane Katrina relief!

5. Lots of money for Halliburtion, KBR, Blackwater, and the rest of Bush's

contributors...that is where all that money is going to go.

They have no intention of giving fair paying jobs to former Gulf residents.

All that money will go directly into the pockets of Repuke contributors.

10. As long as the Repukes control the House and Senate....nothing.
Just sit and watch as the money disappears into the pockets of Halliburton etal...as it does in Iraq.

9. It means they know we are watching their no bid Haliburton contracts
And people are going to be pissed off when their tax money disappears into the pockets of wealthy corps once again.

Bush also lifted min wage requirements under some 1930 emergency law so that Haliburton can use slave labor to pump up their profits. DESPICABLE!

15. The Davis-Bacon Act
It was passed by Congress during the 30's and repugs have had a hard-on for it for years, but just couldn't do away with it despite their best efforts. Bush did away with it with the stroke of a pen using "emergency" as the reason to turf it (finally).

**The load moan heard from DC on Thursday was a collective GOP Congressional orgasm at the thought of the spoils to follow.
