8. Remember Nagin saying, "Do the math?"
He was figuring out how many people were left in the city after the evacuation, assuming 80% evacuated. I'm going by memory now and it's past my bed time ... but he came up with a number in the tens of thousands. I don't think anyone (except the bushies) WANT that many people to be dead, but if they are, it shouldn't be covered up. This administration is heavily into CYA, no matter what the issue is. They can't risk having the number go higher than 9/11 or they won't be able to hide their f**k-up very well. After all, we were supposed to be "safer". So, they may be trying to hide the bodies instead. That's how I'm reading it. Now, when all is said and done, if they only find a few hundred bodies and some 10,000 people are still listed as missing, that should make people wonder.

13. Are they dividing their efforts now?
I mean, they are not specifically recovering dead bodies yet, are they? They are trying to get out survivors, round up stray animals before they become a pack of marauders, restoring power, pumping the water out, and clearing the street so vehicles can get through. I would imagine they are recovering bodies only when they have to clear them out to accomplish those other tasks. Once that is all done and their attention is devoted primarily to body recovery the numbers will no doubt go up.

4. They are reporting around 10% of what they are actually finding
Edited on Sun Sep-11-05 10:29 PM by jsamuel
This almost garentees the number to be below 9/11 as they would need the count to be 30,000 to go over 3,000.

152 found in Jefferson alone, but only 20 being counted

5. That's more than Drudge is saying on his show
He's talking double digits. "Why aren't we hearing about the positives of this like not nearly as many people died as they thought? THis could have been a much worse disaster." At least he didn't add, 'thanks to the quick work of president bunnypants' Now he's celebrating the bar that never closed, as if that makes it much better for people that are sleeping on a cot in the Astrodome and carry all their belongings in a plastic bag. Christ, he's screaming media fraud now, "they knew we wouldn't check the facts, so they made it as hysterical as possible" I want to reach into the radio and kick his ass! :spank:

6. I was in the airport in Memphis this afternoon and a guy across
from me was on his cell phone talking about New Orleans (he was apparently a journalist just returning from there, as he kept mentioning his editor). He said he had been out on airboats and that when bodies were found they were just noting the GPS coordinates and not attempting to recover them. He also said there were body bags with corpses in them sitting for days at the place where the boats launched and corpses tied to light poles. He mentioned that Christiane Amanpour (sp?) was on a boat when they had been told no journalists were being allowed out on them and that he threw all the clothes he wore while there out because of the way they smelled.

They guy looked pretty tired and not at all concerned that a number of people were hearing everything he said.

So, maybe "recovered" means "under refrigeration."

18. Yes, I believe they are tagging most of the bodies first
Edited on Mon Sep-12-05 03:08 PM by DoYouEverWonder
and leaving them in place where it will be easier to ID the person and gather evidence. That is just the first step of a gruesome task. However, the body is not counted until it is checked in at the morgue. It is the only way to get an accurate count.

So if people want to get real death toll counts today, maybe they want to go down and help collect bodies? I don't see too many people jumping out of windows for the job.

10. Sounds like they have preliminary teams going out to LOCATE bodies
and then by using the GPS coordinates a followup "body fetching" team will go out and bring them in.

We will know the true body count by the death certificates filed eventually.

15. Exactly.
We'll get an accurate count eventually. I'm sure they'll play with the numbers and the process to allow for press releases with low numbers for as long as humanly possible. But people won't just forget family members.

12. Heard this AM on Clear Channel local station: more dead in MS than LA
Something like 164 in MS, 147 NOLA...

Come onnnnnn. :eyes:

This demands action. We need to be writing and calling our representatives for transparent counts.

14. Who are they counting?
I heard or read something somewhere--maybe here--that they're only counting those killed by the hurricane and not those killed by flooding, dehydration, lack of medical care, etc.

Are they counting the guy who leaped to his death in the Superdome?

The old woman who died in her wheelchair at the convention center?

The dead at the hospitals?

Vera who was hit by an SUV speeding on its way out of the city?

The man whose body waited on the overpass with his widow?

The old people who drowned at the nursing home?
