http://www.velvetrevolution.us/#020505The reason I bring this to your attention is two hold. First, the civil rights abuses that were incurred by low income African Americans in Ohio (and elsewhere) on election day is indicative of a pattern of civil rights abuse of low income African Americans at the hands of the Bush Administration. We hear now that the poor victims left in horrific conditions in New Orleans had nothing to do with race. I have linked a video about election day in Ohio. I urge you to view this (and we have much more video documentation if you are interested) and see if you see similarities. I suggest that race does play a factor. I think that until this ugliness is brought into the spotlight it will continue.
The second reason I am writing you is about the consequences of the media's failure to cover what happened in Ohio. I do not intend to lay blame, instead want to bring it into the forefront so that we as a society can learn we must address the truth instead of merely sweeping it under the proverbial rug. Until the Katrina disaster, the main stream media's focus has been on fluff coverage of the runaway bride, Michael Jackson scandal and other superfluous stories, as well as purporting the White House talking points. True investigations were carried out not by tradition forms of media, but as the hands of citizen journalists and so called "bloggers". Downing Street Minutes and other pertinent "real stories" were brought forward to the American people from of this new media, which came to life due to the internet. The absence of investigative reporting and the white-washing of the truth makes the main stream media negligent of it's duty. The American people deserve truth over spin. The press has a responsibility to deliver the facts to the public. It was this reluctance to speak up against the White House, that lead to the burying of the Ohio election details. It has also lead to the lack of inquiry into administration officials who are unqualified to hold their positions. Perhaps most damning is the lack of questioning of the evidence which lead our country into war.
If we are to move forward to correct the past mistakes, we need a strong press free of close relationships to those they must hold accountable. I hope someone will read this and receive some insight as to mistakes that have been made. So many before us have sacrificed so that we can live in a free society. That freedom depends on overseers asking tough questions.
