There Are No Democrats Left
I just got back from the VA and couldn't avoid getting into a discussion with an old fascist. Please excuse the f word, but you need to know the details leading up to it.
While peacefully sitting waiting for my checkup, an older Vietnam vet was talking about how it wasn't bushes fault about the Katrina mess and was joined by another vet who stated the obvious that it was a natural disaster and there was no way he could've done anything. I couldn't hold back- dubbie was only 3 or 4 days late and I reminded them that brownie was all but fired for his inadequate response.
Nurse calls - Demonfighter- yes and I walk for my checkup. In the background I here this assholish voice say, "he's a democrat". I was about to cheer and raise my arms in victory, but instead stewed and by blood pressure rose. I was riled and I had to tell the gal checking my blood pressure that the old boys in the waiting room may have escalated my BP. She took it again after I had simmered down a little.
Released back to the waiting room:
The one fella is gone and I asked the other if I had said something wrong, because I heard the, "he's a democrat thingy". He said no, but admitted that he said it. I asked, " is it wrong to be a democrat?". No he says, but we continue to talk and he then says, "what else could the country have done?" Kerry would have destroyed the country. Of course I said that I doubted that, but I was more fond of Dean and that the whole dem party has problems. He then informed me that there are no democrats anymore, they are all socialists. Oh boy, here we go! I asked him if there was any bad names that the Republicans like, like fascist or nazi, because that is what they appear to be. The country is more divided now than ever.
Sorry for the length, but we went on and on with even the receptionist coming out to see if everything was OK. She was moreso looking at me so I said we were having a good debate.
:argh:
Beware out there the koolaid drinking zombies are all around.

2. Thanks for posting your encounter
I'm glad you spoke up. I think Dems have been quiet and polite for so long that Repubs don't have any idea how strongly we feel.

I did something the other day that I would not have done in the past. I walked up to a car with a W sticker on it and began a conversation with the driver.

This was just before Katrina hit so I had Cindy Sheehan on my mind. The driver told me that the war in Iraq was justified because the 9/11 bombers trained in Iraq. Of course, I couldn't convince him otherwise, but he did find out that Dems are not wimps when he talked to me. He was on the defensive in our conversation, not me. And I think that was a real change for him, especially since I was arguing that my Navy fighter pilot husband and his friends think that people are dying needlessly in Iraq. In other words, the Dems have macho people on their side as well as more thoughtful, teacher types like me.

I'm frankly tired of biting my tongue and being labeled all sorts of unpatriotic, unamerican things.

4. you should have asked him if Roosevelt or Truman were democrats,
then reminded him that they were "socialists" before most Americans were born, so this bullshit "democrats are leftists now" thing is like 70 years too late.

13. I asked him about his definition of socialist
Now I could be wrong, but I assumed that they usually then push us over to communist. He said that it was much worse than communist. I wondered if it was about welfare, etc. and he told me to read up, but I think his little definition of socialist was too all encompassing. I don't know why the righties feel they need to put their enemies in a box. There was a time when republicans and democrats got along fine, before the great divider came along.

22. much worse? tell me, under which system are multiparty elections banned in
favor of the singular Communist party?

I swear man, some people think gay marriage or abortion makes you a Socialist, but to that I refer people to the very Catholic and very Socialist government of Spain.

23. Obviously a very bigoted guy
Just call them all socialists and that solves everything.
Him and the other fellow were talking about the Hmong guy that killed all those deer hunters in WI and the one said that if it had been a white man that he would have lost everything and been put away. A guy behind me says "bullsh*t" and nothing more- he was I think hispanic. We even covered the WACO and other militia stuff. I told them that the Aryan nations folks were racist. At least the one fellow agreed that the Koresh's and others should have obeyed the laws and everything would have been fine.

9. Welcome to DU!
I try to be polite, but would never tell old hurt, disabled veterans that they lost the war. Veterans never lose, they are just misused from time to time, such as the Iraq guagmire.
I think the old fart was maybe a Korean war vet, because he brought up Pueblo, which I told him that I wasn't up on.
He tried to tell me that Carter gave everything away. I served under Carter and told him that he was one of the best Presidents we ever had. Clinton also gave everything to China. I had to remind him that when bush came to power he flew our most top secret plane right in to china for them to disassemble and whatever.
When he asked where I was getting my information, I told him that I read a lot on the internets. That cleared it up for him, he wouldn't believe a thing on there. I then told him that all he was saying sounded like fox and rove etc.

7. Democrats have been successfully "framed" by the Republicans...
As a bunch of socialists, homosexual-loving, big-spending liberals, anything-goes, no morality, dangerous hippies. Otherwise, how could one explain a moron like Bush getting as many votes as he did, discounting the voting machines? A big portion of America has that impression of the Democratic Party, whether we like it or not.

10. National Socialists
I've begun countering this blind antipathy towards labeling democrats socialists by calling Republicans, National Socialists. Your average republican looks confused and can't help but ask what I'm talking about. So I explain very briefly that this means that instead of a Republic by and for the people, we live in a corporate state, by and for the Haliburton's. I explain Mussolini said that National Socialism is more correctly called corporatism. You know now distinction between corporations, lobbyists, and government representatives. At this point I still have most people following the argument and most people can at least agree that Cheney if not Bush appears to be a National Socialist.

Then I say, "Of course you probably are more familiar with National Socialists by there party nickname, aren't you?" Blank stares.
NAZIS!!! NEO-CONS ARE F...NN. NAZIS.

Socialism will be a four letter word in this country for generations. Let us democrats harness this knee jerk opposition and put it into its proper context and perspective.

8. My Wife and I went to a bar last night and two near sober guys thought
Bush was the worst president we'd ever had. One said he'd never vote Republican again, I agreed with them. There are still lots of Democrats.

As to veterans (I'm one) they tend to like to glorify war, pisses me off, especially while at the VFW or American legion. I may go to a AZ VFW tonight they do make good cheese burgers on Tuesday nights. While there I have to be a little bit careful about my view point or it could turn nasty then my wife wouldn't want to go back.

One time a VFW member ask me if we should quit the nice guy routine in Iraq? I replied, "I thought we were trying to win over the hearts and minds of Iraqis." He asked, "Then how can we win?" I said, "We can't win." and got a curios stare.

15. Yeah, War is always good with most of these guys.
The one fellow gave me a bit of news that I hadn't heard. He said that we scored big in Iraq yesterday or today and asked, "why did we wait so long?" Apparently their was some big stash of ammo found near the border or whatever and that we are finally striking a blow to them bad people. I didn't dare to start a new debate, but was going to tell him that I fail to see anything good about this war.

11. Why do those idiots always say "Kerry would destroy the country"???
No, Kerry would NOT destroy the country. Kerry is a democrat, so by default, the country would be well off right now. What do those idiots think Bush is doing to the country? A wonderful job? How can that be when he's getting his lowest approval rating ever???

No wonder why I have high blood pressure! Too many Bush idiots!

16. I don't know where they get that
Kerry is a great man although he was not my top pick. Our very own DLC saw to it that the primary would be slanted to cut out debate. We had 9 people running and I for one cherished democracy in action.
Kerry would have done a much better job than what we are seeing now.

Every damned one of them was walking around saying Kerry wouldn't keep us safe from the terr'ists.

It's no surprise the GOP sheep fall right in line. :grr:

18. Good for you! I am glad you let him have it. I am sick to death of
the dems are socialists/communists meme. Sure some of the more progressive dems are socialists, but by and large I don't think many are true socialists at heart. Not that there is anything wrng with that. I consider msyelf to be one.

And i'll say this, countries that have socialism as their backbone seem to function better than America these days. And if any repug denies that you just say: New Orleans.

19. I have no problem with socialist per se
but I don't get where they think any dem, liberal, socialist, communist or green are bad. I think of myself as a democrat as in DFL. I grew up on the farm and was a member of the Labor Union at one time though I am not real big on unions, they are the working class and are the ones who are always taken advantage of.
