The country itself doesn't have a "Chief Justice." It's not a cabinet position.

the title was changed by US Code at the suggestion of Salmon P. Chase, to indicate the judicial branch's co-equality with the other branches.

Associate Justices are officially "Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States" but the Chief's title is, by law, "Chief Justice of the United States".

don't feel bad - it's a very obscure point of knowledge. I just happened to know it because I had occasion to look it up recently when I read a reference to the title, and it didn't look right to me, either.

But... if you think about it... he IS the Chief Justice of the United States - he oversees the federal judiciary. I really don't have a problem with the title.
