FORT MYERS — There are estimates that several hundred Hurricane Katrina evacuees are now calling Southwest Florida home. As of Monday, Lee County has enrolled more than 40 new students displaced by the storm – and more are reportedly on their way.
Although Lee County classrooms are already fighting overcrowding, local schools are welcoming Katrina victims with open arms.
District officials say they'll continue to take in displaced students without jeopardizing the class size amendment.
Kelly Porter, a 13-year-old 7th grade student, had her whole life changed after Katrina hit her hometown. She's now at Alva Middle School, hundreds of miles away from all she knows in Harvey, Louisiana.
