Does Anyone Remember?
I seem to recall in days past when things used to work in the US that if time permitted the Red Cross would send in advance teams to set up local shelters. Does anybody else remember anything like this?

1. I think that a bunch of fat cat corporations watched Red Cross get
tons of money after 9/11 & the tsunami and said to themselves..this has got to stop.

I think the Red Cross has been diminished a great deal. Along with all manner of Non Governmental Organizations & Government Agencies.

The stories will come out.

2. I hope
I certainly hope the stories and truth will out. Maybe a google on Red Cross history might have something about whether they used to go in when there was some advance warning of a storm to stock and set up shelters ahead of the storm. I will be looking into that for sure.

4. Thank you!!!
I am glad to know I wasn't going off the deep end. So where was the Red Cross before Katrina made New Orleans the new Love Canal?? There should have been cots and supplies in both the Superdome and the Convention Center. And why hasn't the media said anything about that?

5. The Red Cross long ago determined that there was not a safe shelter
in New Orleans if there was a hurricane.
They didn't want people to make the assumption that by opening a shelter it would imply safety, because they couldn't do that.
That is why the shelters in New Orleans were called the Shelters of Last Resort, because if you had nowhere else to go, this was your best chance at surviving, but it wasn't ever guaranteed to be safe.
Red Cross was ready to go in AFTER the hurricane, but FEMA would not allow them entrance into the city.
They didn't want "those people" to get to comfortable and not want to leave.:sarcasm:
