Bush Mea Culpa = Shoring up christofascist & Southern black voter blocks
I guaran-fucking-tee you that this COMPLETELY out-of-character apology is orchestrated to play upon the notion of "attonement and absolution of sins" with religious voters. Shrub's move is quite savvy because his religous base is likely to see that he "appears" contrite and will be more likely to give him a pass when it comes time to vote in 2006 and 2008.

This move puts things back on track for the Repukes to continue to push their devisive religious issues tact in 2006 and 2008. Stem-cell, gays, and abortion are where they want to get the country back to arguing prior to casting any votes.

8. I will bet/predict that a forceful apology will be seen Thurs. @ 9pm.
We were witness today to a tacit apology/admission by Shrub, which will get the media going and allow for the Repukes to ramp-up the "Bush is contrite" message for the homerun hit he will personally make on Thurs. night.

Today was just the start of this "apology" campaign...

12. OK, I'm hearing a replay now of his remarks...
sounds like he is saying "to the extent the Federal Govt. screwed up, I'll take responsibility." Problem is, he'll never admit where the federal govt. screwed up, and he already has his scapegoat in Mike Brown. This is POLITICAL to the hilt...not sincere, IMHO, at all. If he takes REAL RESPONSIBILITY for this, then SANCTIONS should follow, and nothing less than resignation should do.

19. This reminds me of a personal apology I received
Edited on Tue Sep-13-05 12:23 PM by Blue_In_AK
once from the father of my first child who ripped me off for all the money I had two weeks after she was born and was never heard from again. Twenty-five years later I had occasion to talk with him and confront him on his dastardly deed. His response? "It wasn't me whole stole your money, but if it makes you feel better, I apologize." HUH???? Obviously he and ** went to the same school of how to avoid accepting personal responsibility.

25. There are sorry people in the world, aren't there.
I'm sorry you had to go through that. Sounds like you and his child were better off without him, though.

27. It's too late for me to edit...
...but the secretary in me has to correct the typo -- of course, I meant to say "It wasn't me WHO stole your money." The point remains the same. GWB -- "It wasn't ME who bungled this emergency response, but if it makes you all feel better, I'll apologize." What a sorry POS he is.

9. He didn't apologize
He said, "to the extent that the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility."

The extent to which the federal government did not do its job remains undefined, and, therefore, so does Bush's claim of responsibility.

to the extend THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT screwed up...like he didn't screw up, but the people under him did....nothing is ever his fault...he's a legend in his own mind.

edit: I want to hear him say, "I SCREWED UP. I put the wrong people in the wrong place, and I was not myself prepared for this as I should have been. It will be best for the country for me to fire my cabinet, and then resign."

6. Not if he acts contrite and this is picked up by Southern preachers.
Very religous Southern African-American voters are more likely to follow the lead of their deacons. If Shrub can play off this notion of Christian "attonement of sins," then it may be possible to at least stem the bleeding within the larger African-American community.

7. Will someone please give me an explanation?
I'm just on from watching confirmation hearings...Has Bush apologized.....or did he just say, "I want to know where my administration screwed up, and IF they did we'll hold people accountable?" What is the big mea culpa?

13. Doubt it.
People don't forget that easily. A press op with a one liner, is NOT an apology nor is it any type of amends or reperations.

The fact is, very few Blacks, esp Southern Blacks ever supported jr to begin with.

18. Wouldn't those preachers lose credibility?
After all, little children have been separated from their families. Elderly people died from neglect. How can preachers warm their church members to those images? I think people will be very angry for a very long time. This has to have consequences.

Edited on Tue Sep-13-05 12:10 PM by texpatriot2004
it's all smoke and mirrors, and he doesn't mean it. Plus, and this is the really dangerous part of blind-faith Satan can quote the scripture better than most of us, when he needs to. BUSH LIES and he has SECRETS and he is EVIL. He's all for show, gotta make it look good though it's rotten to the core.

14. First, it's not a genuine mea culpa.
Not even if you take it at face value. It has a condition on it, and Bush clearly could only bring himself to say it (in typical Bushian fashion) because he included the phrase "what went right" in the whole package. Bush is incapable of admitting guilt, blame or responsibility for anything that goes wrong without suggesting he ought to take credit for what goes right at the same time. He can't own any of his failures.

Second, I respectfully disagree that this is aimed at his usual religious crowd. They're with him no matter what. This is aimed at the reason-based members of the Republican coalition who are so sick of his fuckups that they'll actually stop lying to pollsters and admit they think he's a dope.

20. The President of the largest Black Baptist Org, slams Bush over Katrina

STATEMENT OF DR. WILLIAM J. SHAW

PRESIDENT, NATIONAL BAPTIST CONVENTION, USA, INC.

President Shaw Blasts Gov't Response to Katrina

IN THE WAKE OF HURRICANE KATRINA

September 7, 2005

The N.B.C.U.S.A., Inc. meets this week in Atlanta, GA in our 125th Annual Session.

Last year we held our 124th Annual Session in New Orleans, Louisiana. We see more than coincidence in the fact that we meet in Atlanta just one week after the calamity that has followed the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Katrina challenges us to share and show the love of God to those impacted by its might, and to become agents of their healing by the power of Him who has defeated the power of death itself, and to speak with prophetic urgency concerning troubling and troublesome injustices that seem to be taken for granted by public officials at the highest levels of our national government.

The Southern Baptist Convention is the largest body of churches, with about 16 million members. The original national organization of black Baptist churches is the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A.; it has about 8.2 million members (1992).

21. What a martyr. Their bathed-in-golden-light man-of-God
can do no wrong. But if he did, he admits it, asks for forgiveness & all is well. Might as well haul out a cross & nail himself to it.

And if we question this sincere apology, we're persecuting him.

Hopefully that base will see thru the bu**sh**.

23. Sorry but (IMHO) the black vote is GONE
All they have done over the last 20 years to erase their opposition to Civil Rights-"picking up welfare checks in Cadillacs"-and everything else was erased by the images on TV and that one guy (Kanye West) saying what he said*.

*it should be pointed out that West produced a song of the same name so the act of civil disobedience also was marketing.

24. How do you explain Ken Blackwell, Condi Rice, Powell, & others?
Why is it that it appears that the majority of high-profile and politically connected African-Americans are conservative?

26. Okay here goes
Blackwell-I am not too aware of his bio/history

Powell- could have been POTUS in 2000 but he backed off and let W and McCain go for it. It was Powell's to give away. Then he takes a position with a bunch he completely disagrees with THEN lies for them in front of the world. Powell is a good little soldier and they knew that and they used him-but that doesn't give him cover or an out on the war.

Rice-"wonderful personal story"-He father was a minister who opposed MLK Jr. and the Civil Rights movement thus cementing forever a place for him and anyone he wanted with the conservatives (~"SEE we got one who agrees with us!!!"). Condi is apparently very smart and was a prodigy (piano) ice skates too. Other than that she is just a token. She is a "sovietologist" which means she is as relevant in the 21st Century as a typewriter repairman. They brought her along for the ride. Alberto Gonzales has an even better personal story but his AG confirmation hearing exposed him as a stuffed suit and nothing else. At least Condi has the wherewithall to do what they need her to, she just chose the wrong side. I swear that her inner soul is SCREAMING to get out..that is why when she speaks their talking points she instinctively shakes her head back and forth trying to alert the listener "NO don't believe any of this" like the POW who blinked T-O-R-T-U-R-E in Morse code during his video confession.

WTF? That it such BS.

Have you forgotten about the Congressional Black Caucus?

For every Alan Keyes, there are far more DEMOCRATIC Black politicians.

90% of Blacks vote DEMOCRATIC and always have. Please don't lump Black voters with white fundie voters. There are NO parallels between the two groups.

BTW, did you read the statement of the President from the largest Black church org that I posted?
